Erstausgabe
First edition. 9 maps and plans, some double-page, over 20 photographic illustrations including a folding panorama with two views, one showing a general view of Shanghai in 1876 and the other of the public garden 1876-78, vii + 458pp, bibliography. Light spotting to endpapers and edges, upper edge foxed, upper joint starting but wrapper still firmly attached but a clean and complete copy in the original publisher's wrappers with only very slight loss to the lower spine edge. 29 x 20cm. A few thousand French people took part in shaping this part of the city of Shanghai, which for a century was known as the "French Concession" - where in the 1920s some 250,000 Chinese lived. In 1847, Charles de Montigny and his family arrived in Shanghai to establish a French Consulate and negotiate with the Chinese to set up a concession, a territory where French law would apply and where the French themselves could acquire property. In 1862, there were three concessions in Shanghai: the English concession - the oldest, and the American and French concessions. This history of the French Concession in Shanghai is divided into two periods - the first the early days 1848-1860 with much on the Taiping Rebellion, the second the growth and organisation of the Concession 1860 - 1890 supported by two appendices which includes a list of the French consuls in office between 1848 and 1875 and a bibliography. A useful and detailed work. text in French.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Paris: Plon, 1929. [14] + 458pp + [2]. Illustrated with photos and maps. There are 5 stamps of previous ownership (was a library copy). Beige cloth with leather title label on spine. The Shanghai French Concession was a foreign concession in Shanghai, China from 1849 until 1943, which progressively expanded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The concession came to an end in 1943 when the French State under German pressure signed it over to the pro-Japanese Reorganized National Government of China in Nanjing. For much of the 20th century, the area covered by the former French Concession remained the premier residential and retail district of Shanghai, and was also one of the centres of Catholicism in China. Despite re-development over the last few decades, the area retains a distinct character and is a popular tourist destination.
