"When pianist McCoy Tyner moved to CBS in the early '80s, Milestone released Reflections, a two-record retrospective of Tyner's recordings from 1972 to 1975. The selections were taken from the following albums: Sahara, Song For My Lady, Echoes of a Friend, Song of the New World, Enlightenment, Sama Layuca, Atlantis, and Trident, and involved groupings from solo piano to large band. What they all had in common were an uncompromising commitment to good music" (Bob Rusch at AllMusic website). First pressing, signed boldly in full by Tyner in blue marker pen on the front cover. The pianist joined "the more commercially oriented" Milestone label in 1972, and "with a band of younger newcomers began to hone an acoustic mix of postbop, chantlike Coltrane-esque hooks and Latin grooves that would bring him a big popular following" (John Fordham, The Guardian obituary). One of the most influential pianists in jazz, Tyner is teamed here with a stellar lineup of Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Hubert Laws (flute), Bennie Maupin (tenor and bass clarinet), Bobby Hutcherson (vibes), Stanley Clarke (unusually at this time on acoustic bass), Jack DeJohnette (drums), and Bill Summers (percussion). Scott Yanow at AllMusic website describes the album as "essentially high-quality advanced modal hard bop". This is an attractive and handsomely produced album from the string of fine recordings made for Milestone. Signed boldly by Tyner on the front cover in black marker pen, "To Ed, McCoy Tyner". This is the first pressing of the great pianist's first album for Milestone, voted Record of the Year by the Down Beat critics, "a deservedly successful release, which transformed his career" (Ian Carr in Jazz: The Rough Guide). The quartet comprises Sonny Fortune (soprano, alto, flute), Calvin Hill (bass and percussion) and Alphonse Mouzon (drums, trumpet, flute). Tyner's "often massive piano sound, complemented by the intensity of Fortune and Mouzon, creates irresistible impetus and fiery passion" (ibid.). Tyner is pictured on the front cover seated on a crate in a wintry urban wasteland, the Japanese koto across his knees, an instrument which he employs to delightful effect on the track "Valley of Life". 12-inch vinyl LP (Milestone MSP 9039), new plain paper sleeve (original sleeve also present), original album cover. A little shelf wear, corners slightly creased, otherwise very good; disc in excellent condition.
