He was educated in Paris, worked in California just after the gold rush, was Parish Priest of Tamworth for a few months in 1862 before marrying and studying law at Melbourne University. Admitted to the Queensland Bar in 1865, a brief career as Crown Prosecutor for the Western Districts ended after an argument with Judge Blakeney. He was three times elected to Queensland Parliament.
