Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. 1st Edition. A substantial scholarly collection examining Galileo Galilei's scientific work, methods, intellectual background, and historical influence. Edited by philosopher and historian of science Ernan McMullin, the volume brings together twenty-three essays addressing Galileo's contributions to astronomy and mechanics, his use of mathematics and experimentation, his philosophical outlook, and his place within the Scientific Revolution. The essays originated principally in the Galileo Quartercentenary Congress held at the University of Notre Dame in 1964. In addition to the main scholarly texts, the volume contains the extensive "Bibliografia Galileana, 1940-1964," occupying more than one hundred separately numbered pages. The complete first edition is therefore considerably more extensive than the later paperback reprint, which omitted much of the bibliographical material. Condition: Very Good hardcover in a Fair dust jacket. Original reddish-brown cloth boards are clean and attractive, with gilt spine lettering and decorative black-and-gilt ornamentation. Binding appears firm and square, with mild wear at the spine ends and light rubbing to the boards. Upper page edge is noticeably dusted and age-toned. Interior is generally clean. A faint circular stamp or impression and a small handwritten code and date appear on the copyright page; no extensive annotations or highlighting were observed in the photographed pages. The original dust jacket is heavily worn but substantially complete. Jacket shows considerable rubbing, soiling, edge creasing, chips, and multiple short tears, with larger losses and fraying around the spine head and corners. Spine panel is faded, and the rear panel has dark smudging and additional edge wear. The jacket nevertheless retains its decorative Galileo-themed design and will be protected in a removable archival sleeve before shipment. This is the complete original edition of an important mid-twentieth-century Galileo anthology, combining historical and philosophical scholarship with an unusually extensive contemporary bibliography. It has particular appeal for collections devoted to Galileo, astronomy, mechanics, the Scientific Revolution, the philosophy of science, and the history of science and religion. The book will be carefully wrapped and shipped in a sturdy box, with the fragile dust jacket protected from further wear. Orders are normally shipped promptly, and returns are accepted in accordance with AbeBooks' return policies. SCI 2a.…
