Issued by John Camden Hotten, circa 1872, as No. 4: Library Illustrative of Social Progress / From the Original Editions / Collected by the Late / Henry Thomas Buckle / Author of / "A HISTORY OF CIVILIZATION IN ENGLAND". The series is falsely dated and comprises 7 or 8 works dealing with flagellation, dominant women and the like. The claim that these items were from Buckle's library has been disputed.

An early English translation of this treatise on sexual deviancy and flagellation. Meibom notes that individuals in Germany found using flogging for sexual gratification were reportedly burned alive. This reflects the severe legal and social attitudes toward non-procreative or "unnatural" sexual practices during that era. Very good in later wrappers, residue of original wrappers. Engraved frontispiece, small repair to one corner of frontispiece page, bottom third of title page excised. Uncommon.

The two works bound together, 168 + [120] pages. Moderate edge wear to boards, old stain to inner margin of title and frontispiece of the first work, some notes and ex libris in pen on a front blank; a clean very good copy. The translator's name has been added in pen to the title page of the first work. The first French edition of this famous work by Meibom (1590-1655), first published in Latin in 1639 (See Brunet I, 677). It was the earliest printed work on the subject, considered to be the authoritative text on flogging for two hundred years. This edition was translated into French by Claude Mercier de Compiègne (1763 - 1800). Bartholin's Flagrorum Usu. was first published in Latin in 1669. An elegant edition of these flagellation books, with two charming engraved plates (artist unknown: captioned "G. tex . inve. et sculpe."). Rose: Register of Erotic Books, Item1905 (citing this edition, both works included). The copy of this edition in the Wellcome Collection lacks the second engraved plate and pages 113-168; The copy in the BnF has the second engraving bound in at pg. 96 of the first work. The catalogue of the Danson Erotica Collection (Oxford, 2019; KK.3.30(1) and (2)) describes a copy identical to the one offered here, with the two plates utilized at frontispieces. The position of the engravings in the BnF copy (as well as the plural "Gravures" in the title of the first work) suggests that the two plates were meant to illustrate the first work, and that the second was not illustrated. The binder has perhaps taken the liberty of re-positioning the second plate (quite pleasingly) as a frontispiece to the second work. Reissued in 1795; this 1792 edition is scarce.

Spine leather has been archivally reattached to textblock. Boards have significant rubbing wear to extremities, and light bumping to corners, in some cases exposing the boards. Volume 1 front board is partially detached from the spine. Textblocks have light to moderate age toning, minor foxing throughout, and light soiling scattered throughout. Speckling to edges. Volume 1 has a library sticker and the bookplate of Sir Robert Johnson Eden (17741844) on the front pastedown, and ink stains on pages 174-175, impacting some text. Volume 1 has light offsetting to some pages preceding plates. Text in Greek and Latin. Shelved in Room G.
