Born in London in 1928, Tilson worked as a carpenter and joiner. After National Service in the RAF, he studied at St. Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He has taught at important art schools in London, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, New York and Hamburg, and is a popular exhibitor at the Royal Academy's annual Summer Exhibition.
