Zustand: Neu. Das Waisenhaus der Theologischen Fakultät in Göttingen 1747-1938. Der Autor zeichnet die Geschichte der Einrichtung nach, die nicht nur Hinterbliebenen von Universitätsangehörigen, sondern allen bedürftigen Kindern der Stadt offenstand und so über fast 200 Jahre das soziale Leben der Stadt mitgeprägt hat. Bald nach der Gründung der Göttinger Universität erhielt die Theologische Fakultät die Genehmigung, in eigener Verantwortung ein Waisenhaus einzurichten. Dies entsprach den zeitgenössischen Vorstellungen von Armenfürsorge und Philanthropie, wie eine große Zahl von Waisenhausgründungen in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts bezeugt. Dennoch ist das Göttinger Beispiel einzigartig: Die universitäre Einrichtung stand allen Waisen offen. So werden sowohl der Gründungsprozeß als auch die spätere Verwaltung der Anstalt durch die Theologische Fakultät nur durch das reformerische Selbstverständnis der Universität verständlich. Nach über 150jähriger Autonomie schmolz im Zuge der Inflation Anfang der 1920er Jahre das Kapital der Anstalt dahin. Damit geriet sie in den Sog der NS-Wohlfahrtsorganisation und wurde 1935 "HJ-Heim für auslandsdeutsche Schüler und Lehrlinge" des NSDAP-Flüchtlingswerks.
