The genus Mitrophora Carpenter, 1865 and its sub-genera, Mitrolumna, Anarithma and Lovellona are discussed. The problems of Mitrolumna olivoidea (Cantraine, 1835) from the Mediterranean sea and Mitrolumna crenipicta (Dautzenberg, 1889) from the Azores are also discussed. Mitrophora (Mitrolumna) mediterranea n. sp. is introduced and M. (M.) karpathoensis (Nordsieck, 1969) is established as a valid Mediterranean species. Notes for the separation of most of the European and one West African species are included. New species of the genus, Mitrophora (Mitrolumna) denizi n. sp., from West Africa, M. canariensis n. sp., M. swinneni n. sp., M. gofasi n. sp., M. engeli n. sp., M. cachiai n. sp. and m. hierroensis n. sp. all from the Canary Islands, M. azorensis n. sp. from the Azores and M. philippinensis n. sp. from the Philippines are also introduced.
