GOOD condition. "Waldemar (Bernhard) Kaempffert was born and raised in New York City. He received his Bachelor of Science from the City College of New York in 1897. Thereafter, he was employed by Scientific American, first as a translator (1897 1900), then as managing editor (1900 1916). He also wrote articles about science for other publications during this time, including three articles for Harper's, beginning in 1908. In 1916, he started working as the editor of Popular Science Monthly. In 1922, he began writing essays about science for The New York Times, where he was named Editor of Science and Engineering in 1927. During the 1920s, he also wrote free-lance magazine articles. in a June 1924 essay for Forum magazine, "The Social Destiny of Radio," he addressed a non-technical audience, discussing where radio had been and how it was changing American life."--Wikipedia.

[++] The Board set out to find…what the average blue color working family of four needed to survive in the United States in 1935. The Board first determined what the annual purchasing/replacement needs were for a family to form a baseline for computing the cost of living. That is what is covered in this work, how many times (or how much) of an item was in the budget to be replaced or supplemented x-times/yearwe don't see the actual dollars-and-cents of the issue, but we do see an outline of what was consumed and how often the goods would be replaced over the course of a year (or more in 20% of the cases). What this reveals, I think, is really how very little was spent on just about everythingfrom sugar to sweaters--here in the height of the Great Depression. For example, in the clothing category (for boys 12 years old), the Board figured for one set of the following, per year: 1 each per year of suits, pajamas, stockings, shoes, galoshes, gloves. Winter coats (multi year wear of one) Twice per year replacements of neckties, shoes, trousers. For adult male: 1 unit per year of trousers, wool work shirt, shoes, galoshes, felt hat; 2 allowed per year of neckties; 3 per year of socks; also 6 handkerchiefs. Women: coat every 3 years, 3 dresses/year; once a year for a large sweater, vest, bloomer, nightgown, pumps, slippers; twice a year for corsets and slips. Interesting to note that in the food department the family needs are reckoned in pounds/year, the heaviest yearly staples being potatoes (600 lbs), carrots (200 lbs), white cabbage (200 lbs), tomatoes (140 lbs), bananas (100 lbs), butter (78 lbs)--and of course there was sugar (156 lbs).

Born to a Jewish family in Berlin, Gottfurcht worked in the textile industry, joining a trade union when he was 17. In 1919, he began working full-time for the Central Association of Employees. In 1933, the Nazis closed the unions, and Gottfurcht became an insurance agent. This enabled him to create an illegal trade union organisation in Saxony, Thuringia and Silesia. He was arrested in 1937 and charged with treason, but was released due to a lack of evidence, and in 1938, he was able to emigrate to the United Kingdom. In the UK, Gottfurcht joined the Labour Party and tried unsuccessfully to influence British government policy on Germany after the war. He also joined the Union of German Socialist Organisations in Great Britain. He was briefly interned in 1941, but on release set up an organisation of German trade unionists, and broadcast on the German language programmes of the BBC. It was one of the first U.S. Unions to have a membership consisting of mostly females, and it played a key role in the labor history of the 1920s and 1930s. The union is generally referred to as the "ILGWU" or the "ILG". The ILGWU grew in geographical scope, membership size, and political influence to become one of the most powerful forces in American organized labor by mid-century. Representing workers in the women's garment industry, the ILGWU worked to improve working and living conditions of its members through collective bargaining agreements, training programs, health care facilities, cooperative housing, educational opportunities, and other efforts. The ILGWU merged with the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union in 1995 to form the Union of Needle trades, Industrial and Textile Employees (UNITE). UNITE merged with the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE) in 2004 to create a new union known as UNITE HERE. The two unions that formed UNITE in 1995 represented only 250,000 workers between them, down from the ILGWU's peak membership of 450,000 in 1969. Rose Schneiderman and the Women's Trade Union League assisted with the early organizing efforts of the White Goods Workers. These workers consisted mainly of young immigrant girls. Early leaders of the local included Samuel Shore. On March 1913, 15,000 workers went on strike against the sweatshop conditions. A six week strike ensued in which many of the girls on the picket lines were attacked and arrested. Stamped as being donated to the Library of Congress by the National Committee on Atomic Information, 22 March 1946 it is possible that this was printed earlier, but obviously no later than March 1946. Provenance: National Committee on Atomic Information (functioning 1945-1948), then the Library of Congress, with their stamp on the rear of the first leaf. LC surplus rubber stamp on rear page. GOOD condition. NO COPIES located in WorldCat. RARE. I've reproduced the entire document (see images). [++] "In 1945, Morrison was among the scientists of the Manhattan Project, along with J. Robert Oppenheimer, his former graduate-school teacher, and was witness to the Trinity nuclear testing. He helped assemble the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and was part of a team that toured Japan after the country's surrender ended World War II. Following the war, Morrison became a forceful advocate of international arms control, helping to found the Federation of American Scientists, writing for the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, appearing at meetings and signing statements opposing militarism. His views on disarmament led him to be labeled a communist sympathizer, and he was called to testify before the U.S. Senate International Security Subcommittee in 1953. In 1946, Morrison left Los Alamos and jointed Hans Bethe at Cornell, where he became interested in astrophysics and cosmology. During the 1950s, he began to concentrate on theoretical astrophysics, and he and a colleague proposed a search for radio signals emanating from extraterrestrial beings. He moved on to M.I.T. in 1964, where he authored and co-authored several books and studies on arms control."--Atomic Archives site.

(It should be noted here that France is identified without qualifying that it is "Free France", j…ust "France". ("France Forever" is the Fighting French Association in the U.S.) No publisher listed, but probably Freedom House. 11"x 8.5", 14 leaves. Provenance: Library of Congress, with their stamp on the front and rear page. [++] Good condition (5/10), mostly because of the dusting on the first leaf, and also for the very very faint reminder that this had been folded in thirds long ago. Mimeographed, and staple-bound. Paper crisp. [++] Freedom House (1941-today) is best known for political advocacy surrounding issues of democracy, political freedom, and human rights. Wendell Willkie and Eleanor Roosevelt served as its first honorary chairpersons, and was established with the help of Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, Elizabeth Cutter Morrow, Dorothy Thompson, George Field, Herbert Agar, Herbert Bayard Swope, Ralph Bunche, Father George B. Ford, Roscoe Drummond and Rex Stout.

[++] "The broadcast last September 18 [1941] by Hubert Ripka, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs in the Czech government-in-exile, in which he urged Czechs to maintain their solidarity with their Jewish fellow citizens, appears today in booklet form under the auspices of the Czechoslovakian Maccabi here. Entitled We Think of You, the booklet contains a summary of anti-Jewish legislation and persecution in Czechoslovakia under the Nazis. It appeals to Jews all over the world to support the Czech cause which is also the fight of Czechoslovak Jewry. -- "Czech Maccabis Issue Booklet Recounting Nazi Terror in Czechoslovakia"--Jewish Telegraph Agency, Dec 18, 1941 (online, their site). [+=] Rupka left Czechoslovakia as a refugee for government in exile in Paris; when the French were defeated, he moved on to London, where he delivered this enormously sympathetic and supportive address and published its text. As stated in the work, the speech was made to the "humiliated and persecuted Jewish inhabitants in the temporarily enslaved Czechoslovakia". He said "Czechoslovak Jews, we think of you with sincere sympathy in these days. We know of your sufferings and we carefully assemble all the data about the way in which you are persecuted and the people who persecute you We know everything, even the details. We cannot help you for the present. But we tell the world about your sufferings and we assure you that they will not be forgotten. ".

(Not later than 1938 as that is when the document was transferred from the D.C. public library to the Library of Congress. (There is a 10mm p…erforated stamp on the bottom front first leaf and a LC rubberstamp on the rear wrapper.) GOOD copy, though there is some chipping here and there, and also some dusting on the first leaf as it probably sat in some dusty box for 75 doing nothing. Anyway the French delegation proposed "placing" civilian and "bombing aircraft" at the disposal of the League; also, they wanted long range bombers to strike deep into intruding territories. Also there's a proposal to set army and navy "material" at the disposal of the League. And something about establishing an international force to "protect civilian populations", So it goes.

WorldCat locates NO copies. $300 [+=] Grossly philosophical, waxing, turgid pronouncements on the history of state law under the NSDAP, like "Leading is not the same as ruling, the essence of leadership is not to rule, but to serve." And that in the Nazi system there was "no room for dictatorship". And that change is made "not through vilence but via the compelling power of an idea" and so on. [++] There are references to the Law of Reconstruction of the Reich (30 Jan 1934); the legal decree for making Germany and the NSDAP as one (1 December 1933); and also the sterilization law of 14 July 1933, though there is really no mention of what the law was about outside of how beautifully the government and the people were able to abide and institute it (on pg 19). "Wilhelm Stuckart (16 November 1902 15 November 1953) was a German Nazi Party lawyer, official, and a State Secretary in the Reich Interior Ministry during the Nazi era.[1] He was a co-author of the notorious Nuremberg Laws and was a participant in the Wannsee Conference that formulated the Final Solution. He also served as Reichsminister of the Interior in the short-lived Flensburg government at the end of the Second World War."--Wikipedia.

Provenance: Library of Congress, with their 10mm "L.C." perforated stamp on the bottom of the first leaf and a small "Pamphlet Collection" stamp on upper right. (I purchased this collection of the L.C. years ago.) Staple bound, first page detached. RARE. No copies located in WorldCat. [++] Ickes perhaps the greatest of the New Deal Dealers, 1874-1952, was Secretary of the Interior 1933-46 and also in charge of the WPA 1933-39, and one of the most inside of the FDR confidants addresses a prestigious crowd on the celebration of the first Palestine Day. The address was made at Memorial Continental Hall (of the DAR), and mentions the president of the National Zionist Organization, Morris Rothenberg. This Palestine Day comes five years after the Palestine Day declared by Mohammed Amin al-Husayni, which was followed by a general strike. GOOD condition.
