Elio Modigliani, figura autentica di esploratore-naturalista a cavallo fra Otto e Novecento, parte nel 1886 per una serie di viaggi coraggiosi tra le popolazioni dell'arcipelago malese (a Nias, tra i Batak di Sumatra e a Mentawei) in compagnia di un assistente persiano, esperto imbalsamatore di animali, e con un seguito di cacciatori malesi cui affida le sue preziose collezioni zoologiche e botaniche. Nel 1891 si imbarca a Sumatra per Engano, "l'isola della gente nuda", "l'isola delle donne" raccontata dai navigatori portoghesi, olandesi e inglesi, perlopiù scampati, su quelle coste, a un naufragio.
