L'esordio in corsa della prima Ferrari, a Piacenza l'11 maggio 1947 è stato sicuramente un insuccesso. Un "insuccesso promettente" come lui stesso ebbe a commentare. Ma fu veramente un insuccesso sfortunato, come sembrava allora, a invece un semplice tassello di quel più ampio disegno fortunato che avrebbe portato la Ferrari ai vertici della notorietà? Il successo, la prima vittoria della Ferrari, arrivò due settimane dopo, ma in uno scenario assolutamente diverso. Non in una gara di provincia, che nella storia dell'automobilismo viene oggi ricordata forse solo per quell'insuccesso, ma nel Gran Premio di Roma, tra le vestigia imperiali delle Terme di Caracalla, in uno scenario teatrale dedicato ai grandi debutti; il palcoscenico ideale per l'avvio di una carriera trionfale.
