A magisterial work on the subject, organized around essays of narrower topics such as Revue, Opera, Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith; cumulatively, these are a virtual sweeping survey of theater costume without the plodding quality of a book announcing itself as a survey, and the caliber of writers and artists lend a spark to the text and artwork seldom encountered in a survey. 4to. 28 by 22.5 cm. xv, [1], 143 pp. 110 plates (frontis, then numbered I to CIX). Edges of spine rubbed,and small spots of worn through cloth along edges. Spine tips with tiny closed tearing. A hint of shake to the binding. Otherwise, a very clean copy. 46 of the plates are full color plates. Plates on a glossy paper stock, with accompanying tissue guards with crediting discreetly printed on verso, or facing side, of tissue guards. Also an abundance of illustrations scattered throughout the text.…

Printed on hand-made paper, top edge gilt. Gilt cover design by Gordon Craig. Original publisher's cream quarter vellum lettered gilt at the spine over mauve boards with gilt cover design/ illustration by Gordon Craig. Articles by theatre experts, with superb illustrations of costumes designed for the stage. The designers include Edward Gordon Craig, Laurence Bradshaw, Max Beerbohm, Lucy Norton, Albert ffrench Salkeld, Norah McGuinness, Paul Shelving, Edmund Dulac, Doris Zinkeisen,Charles Ricketts, Claud Lovat Fraser, Oliver Messell and William Nicholson. Some of these designs were previously unpublished. Cavanagh, British Theatre. A Bibliography 1901 to 1985, 525: 'Limited edition of 25 numbered copies on hand-made paper.
