In late October, 1862, the author, along with her infant sister and mother, take leave from their home in Bainbridge, Ohio, heading south at the behest of her father, an Assistant Surgeon with the 43rd Ohio Infantry Regiment. He had taken gravely ill after the Battle of Corinth, and called his family to his side. For the next few months, they lived in hospitals and hotels, side by side with doctors, nurses, soldiers and negro contraband, moving as the dictates of war would demand.
