In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Acceptable. No Jacket. Originally published in 1880 this is the 1893 printing. If you need a nice copy of this title, this is not it. Most if not all the leading edges of the text block show the tide line of a water stain and corresponding rippling of the pages. Light wear to the binding. A portrait Brer Rabb…it gold-stamped on the front cover. A Christmas greeting in pencil from 1893 on the first blank end sheet. The book is complete, but because of the cosmetic issues outlined, it is sold as a reading/research copy. Frederick s. Church and James H. Moser (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. First Thus. This copy is in new condition bound in burgundy cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling and decoration to the spine and the upper board. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. There is a neat inscription to the f.e.p. There is a clear acetate cover in new condition. International… postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. A wonderful book, full of wit, black humor and love between and ex-slave and a young white boy. In spite of the fact that some of the words are no longer "politically correct" this book is a must for all those persons who would like a closer look at what life was really like in the South in the years following the Civil War, and what gave great joy to the reader or listener. Uncle Remus is the fictional title character and narrator of a collection of African American folktales compiled and adapted by Joel Chandler Harris and published in book form in 1881. Harris was a journalist in post-Reconstruction era Atlanta, and he produced seven Uncle Remus books. He did so by introducing tales that he had heard and framing them in the plantation context. He wrote his stories in a dialect which was his interpretation of the Deep South African-American language of the time. For these framing and stylistic choices, Harris's collection has garnered controversy since its publication. Many of these stories are believed to have Creek Indian influence too. Ref CC 7. Frederick S Church & James H. Moser (illustrator).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 231+[8 ad] pages with frontispiece, 6 other plates and diagrams. Small octavo ((7 3/4" x 5 1/4") bound in original brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt rabbit pictorial to cover with black back ground drawing. Illustrations by Frederick S Church and James H Moser. First ed…ition, first state with "presumptive" on last line page 9 and "New Books. A Treatise on the Practice of Medicine" (BAL 7100:1). Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings; The Folk-Lore of the Old Plantation is a landmark 1881 collection of African American folktales compiled and adapted by white American journalist Joel Chandler Harris. Originally published by D. Appleton & Company, the book introduced a global audience to the Br'er Rabbit trickster tales and remains a highly influential yet deeply controversial work of American literature. Though framed as innocent children's stories, the fables carry deep socio-political allegories: Slavery Survival Strategy: Most of the stories originated from West African oral traditions brought to the Americas by enslaved people. On an allegorical level, Br'er Rabbit represents the enslaved African American population who had to use intellect to survive against the dominant white plantation owners (represented by the stronger animals). The book completely revolutionized animal-centric children's literature. It heavily influenced subsequent works like Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit and modern animated characters like Bugs Bunny. While praised in the 19th century for preserving oral Southern folklore that might otherwise have been lost, the work faces severe contemporary criticism: Critics argue that the character of Uncle Remus promotes a romanticized, sanitized myth of the antebellum South. It presents a nostalgic view of plantation life that masks the brutal realities of slavery. As a white journalist, Harris appropriated these Black ancestral stories and commercially profited from them. The book was the basis for Disney's highly controversial 1946 film Song of the South, which has been locked away by the company for decades due to its racially insensitive depictions. Joel Chandler Harris was an American journalist, fiction writer, and folklorist best known for his collection of Uncle Remus stories. Harris was born in Eatonton, Georgia, where he served as an apprentice on a plantation during his teenage years. He spent the majority of his adult life in Atlanta working as an associate editor at the Atlanta Constitution. Harris led two professional lives: as the editor and journalist known as Joe Harris, he supported a vision of the New South with the editor Henry W. Grady (1880-1889), stressing regional and racial reconciliation after the Reconstruction era. As Joel Chandler Harris, fiction writer and folklorist, he wrote many 'Brer Rabbit' stories from the African-American oral tradition and helped to revolutionize literature in the process. Condition: Corners bumped and slightly rubbed, small closed tear at bottom of title page, some internal soiling and fingering else very good. Frederick S Church and James H Moser (illustrator).

Harris, a white Southern journalist, collected these folktales from enslaved and formerly enslaved African Americans on Georgia plantations. Serialized in newspapers across the United States, the tales proved hugely popular and this first edition was a bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic. The books were responsible for compounding racist stereotypes and disseminating them across generations of readers, as well as portraying a rosy picture of the American South. At the same time, Harris was the first folklorist to make a serious effort to preserve Southern black oral traditions and his books are an important resource for ethnologists and contemporary writers attempting to reconstruct traditional folktales.BAL 7100. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Early Edition. Decorated blue cloth. GROLIER AMERICAN HUNDRED 83. Illustrated with 8 plates and text engravings by Frederick S. Church and James Moser. While not a First Edition (1882), this copy has a wonderful SIGNED AUTOGRAPH QUOTATION on the front endpaper: "'Oh, don't stay long -- Oh, don't stay late--/Let it be…a long ways ter de Goodbye Gate!'/Joel Chandler Harris/West End, Atlanta:/15 May, 1891." While this quote has been reported to come from UNCLE REMUS, it in fact is from a Southern ballad, a Corn-husking song titled "Round It Up A Heap It Up": "Round it up a heap it up a Round it up a corn, A joog-a-loa./De big owl hoot and cry for his mate, My honey, my love!/Oh, don't stay long, oh, don't stay late./It ain't so fur to de goodbye gate." In the book "UNCLE REMUS," JOEL CHANDLER HARRIS AS SEEN AND REMEMBERED BY A FEW OF HIS FRIENDS, the authors on pages 106-108 explain how Harris would usually write this quote in his books. When asked to write an aphorism in a book, Harris said he had no aphorisms and would write this quote. The closest it comes to anything in UNCLE REMUS is the quote "don't stay long!" which occurs in THE PLOUGH-HANDS' SONG (JASPER COUNTY-1860.) on pages 161-162. In any case survivals of any edition of UNCLE REMUS with any quote are scarce. Some aging to the text; the covers bright and strong. Near Fine. Frederick S. Church and James Moser (illustrator).
