1p., 12mo. In fair condition, laid down on backing and a little creased. He thanks him for a letter about 'the study you are doing of Royal bookplates, and of course I remember the icon you had had [sic] of my great aunt Ella and was so pleased to have the postcard of it you kindly sent me'. He is also pleased to learn that Lee has been able to identify the print which his father sent Lee of his bookplate as the work of George Taylor Friend, 'which I am sure he would have been very pleased to know'. Lee's research 'must produced quite a few headaches, but with very interesting results'. He is sending 'a print of my bookplate which my father had designed for me, but perhaps not by George Taylor Friend'.

First edition, first printing. Signed by Lord Mountbatten and inscribed by Sir John Smyth. Publisher's original maroon cloth with titles in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Loosely laid in is an invitation card for the launch of the book, signed and inscribed by Smyth in blue ink. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a little pushing to the spine ends. The contents are clean and bright throughout and remain free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the very good dustwrapper which has a 2cm tear to the head of the rear panel, fading to the spine and a little wear to spine ends. Not price-clipped (£3.00 to the front flap). Signed and inscribed by Sir John Smyth in black ink to the front free endpaper "To John Bettley / with kindest regards / Jackie Smyth / 7.6.71" and additionally signed by Lord Mountbatten in blue ink to the front pastedown "Mountbatten of Burma / A.F." Brigadier Sir John George Smyth, 1st Baronet, VC, MC, PC (1893-1983), often known as Jackie Smyth, was a British Indian Army officer who served in both the First and Second World Wars, earning the Victoria Cross for "conspicuous bravery" in the former at the age of just 21. During the Second World War, Smyth served in Europe and then India. His command of the 17th Indian Division was the source of notable controversy due to its retreat across the Sittang River in Burma, which led directly to the Britain's loss of Rangoon and Lower Burma. Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma (1900-1979) was Supreme Allied Commander of South East Asia Command during the war, overseeing the recapture of Burma and Singapore from the Japanese by the end of 1945. He also served as the last Viceroy of British India, and the first governor-general of the Dominion of India. The present work by Smyth forms a detailed assessment of the fall of Singapore to Japanese forces in 1942 and the leadership of Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival, of whom Percival was a great supporter. An excellent association copy, signed by two key figures in the command of British forces in Asia during the Second World War. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

Notes: From A Royal Childhood to The Mediterranean and After, ten chapters filled with images plus straight-forward text on the life of Louis Mountbatten (1900-1979). This book went to press the same year that an Irish Republican Army bomb ended Mountbatten s life by blowing up his small boat off the coast of Ireland, taking his life and several others, including his grandson, Nicholas Knatchbull aged 14. Family tree at the back together with a letter and colour photograph of his flagship H.M.S. Liverpool. Presented in a Cosway-style binding by Zaehnsdorf with a handsome miniature colour cameo of Lord Mountbatten in uniform at the centre of the front board; covers are in burgundy leather with lined box. Includes some related ephemera with signature.
Besides the letters from Lord Mountbatten (totalling 10 and written between 1963 and 1965), complete with their original envelopes, the collection includes letters from such signatories as Major-Gen. Sir Harold Wernher, who was responsible for coordinating preparations for the launch of the Normandy operations and the construction of the Mulberry Ports; Sir Solly Zuckerman, Secretary Ministry of Defence Whitehall (5 letters, 1964-1967); and Vice-Admiral John Hughes-Hallet. The collection also contains photographs (neatly captioned on verso) of Mountbatten, Maj.-Gen. George Patton, General Crittenberger, Churchill, Senior Military Officers, and others; original artwork used to illustrate the book; and copies of copious papers concerned with Cabinet, War Office and Combined Operations decisions relating to the preparation for the Invasion - all of which are of the greatest interest to the military historian. An inscribed and signed copy of "Mulberry: The Return in Triumph" is included with this collection. From the time he began his research the author worked with the help and constant supervision of Lord Mountbatten, who gave the author not only his own recollections, but also introductions to all the senior officers of the three Services (and some important civilians), in both England and America, who were connected with the preparations for the D-Day Invasion. Although Harrison collected the facts and wrote the book, the text was, by agreement, not passed to the printer until Lord Mountbatten had given it his approval, and so, in Mr. Harrison's own words, "It really ought to be considered as much Lord Mountbatten's book as mine . perhaps even more so". The collection totals 44 pieces. Desirable.
