Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Politics and technology intersect in the international effort to prevent nuclear proliferation. Written for scientists, policy makers, journalists, students, and concerned citizens, The Politics and Technology of Nuclear Proliferation makes a highly complex subject understandable. This comprehensive overview provides information about both the basic technologies and the political realities. Methods of producing weapon materials-plutonium and highly enriched uranium-as well as their use in bombs are described in detail, as is the generally successful international effort to prevent the spread of the ability to make nuclear weapons. In explaining the problems the world will face if nuclear weapons become generally available, Mozley summarizes and reviews the methods used to prevent proliferation and describes the status of those nations involved in trade in nuclear materials. He places emphasis on the danger of attack by renegade nations or terrorist groups, particularly the possibility that weapon material might be stolen from the presently impoverished and unstable former Soviet Union. Explains the issues behind the international effort to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons in the world. The processes for manufacturing the nuclear material used in bombs are explored, the history of nuclear development is examined, and the possibilities of uncontrolled proliferation are looked Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. xiii, [1], 316, [2] pages. Illustrations. Appendix A. Appendix B. Appendix C. Notes. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. Robert Fred Mozley was professor emeritus of physics at Stanford University and an expert on nuclear arms control. Dr. Mozley worked at the Stanford Linear Accelerator, where he did research in high-energy physics on a particle-tracking device he pioneered. The device, a streamer chamber, allows physicists to study subatomic events. Dr. Mozley, who was born in Boston and graduated from Harvard University in 1938, worked on radar technology at the Sperry Gyroscope Company in World War II. He received a doctorate at the University of California at Berkeley in 1950 and took part in the construction of the world's first proton linear accelerator. After teaching and doing research at Princeton University, he joined the Stanford faculty in 1953, became a full professor in 1962 and retired in 1987. As a member of the Faculty Senate, he was among the first to sound the alarm over increasing academic reliance on Pentagon grants and official efforts to designate unclassified research as secret. In retirement he worked on arms-control issues and nuclear non-proliferation as a staff physicist for the Federation of American Scientists and contributed to several publications and a book, ''Reversing the Arms Race.'' He wrote two books, ''Uranium Enrichment and Other Technical Problems Relating to Nuclear Weapons Proliferation'' (Center for International Security and Arms Control, at Stanford, 1994) and ''Politics and Technology of Nuclear Proliferation'' (University of Washington, 1998).
