paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Fair. The first Dublin edition of a celebrated anthology written by self-reflective poet Thomas Gray, with a lovely engraved frontispiece and title vignette. First Dublin edition, published in the same year as the Cork collected edition, printed by William Flyn. In a contemporary full calf binding, with raised bands. With contemporary endpapers and blanks. Without half title, as issued, when compared against a copy held by Hathi Trust. With the engraved frontispiece and engraved vignette title page. Two vignettes in text and woodcut ornaments. Missing 'Ode on Ranelagh, Addressed to the Ladies', comprising p. 153-187. A very popular poet during his lifetime, Thomas Gray was known for his self-reflection and profound exploration of repressed protagonists. Being published in 1768, this anthology was possibly inspired by his newfound friendship with Swiss studen Karl Victor von Bonstetten while a professor of Modern History at Cambridge. As well as this Dublin edition containing two Latin translations of Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, also included are two translations of the phophetic The Fatal Sisters and The Descent of Odin norse poems. In a contemporary full calf binding, with raised bands.Spine label faded.Externally, hinges are tender, with particular strain to the front hinge. Scorch to the tail of the spine, resulting in loss, with general wear to the spine and lifting to the head. Marks to the boards and shelf wear. Internally, missing 'Ode on Ranelagh' pp.153-187, with gutter split in places. pp.59-80 working loose at the head, and to hinges pp.80-81, and to tail of pp.104-105. Subsequent slight 'springing' of the binding. Pages are generally bright and clean, with minor age toning and slight browning to leaf extremities. Loss to the front free endpaper, with symmetrical loss to the rear endpaper, adhered slightly to the rear paste down. Fair. Not Stated (illustrator). book.…

In den WarenkorbFirst Scottish edition, which includes, among others, poems from Gray's most famous work, Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard (1751). For this edition, the Foulis brothers had Alexander Wilson cut a special font of double pica roman type. Updike, Printing Types, II: 143. Foulis publications "are now much sought after as admirable specimens of typography, and are noticeable for their severely plain elegance. . . The works produced by it are quite entitled to rank with the Aldines, Elzevirs, Bodonis, Baskervilles, which are all justly renowned for the varied excellencies they possess, but no provincial, and certainly no metropolitan, press in [Scotland] has ever surpassed that of the two brothers" The Library, March 1889, p. 95. 4to. [4], 63pp., [1]. Gaskell 475 (common paper variant without "*" which Gaskell notes is "a much rarer book than the fine [variant]"). Northup 56. ESTC T127821. Very good minus in handsome modern full blindstamped calf with new endpapers by Dragonfly Bindery, toning and brittle front free endpaper with prior owner name, contents generally clean with tear to leaf, professional repair to title page not affecting text, scattered light foxing, still a pleasing copy.…
