Includes the Latin dedication to Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales, along with preliminary material, introduction, and tables of alphabets (English, Saxon, Greek, and Hebrew). The dictionary proper begins correctly with the letter "A" in double-column format, with entries including early spellings such as "Chymistry." Printed throughout using the long "s" characteristic of the period. A substantial and influential work of early English lexicography, widely used prior to Samuel Johnson's dictionary of 1755. Overall Good. Neatly rebound but with a 1cmx2cm closed tear at top of spine. The Latin dedication page is torn/jagged at the edges with some paper loss affecting the beginnings only of the first 8 lines on the verso. The first introduction page shows similar edge wear but with no loss of text. A small (25mm/1") area of paper loss to the Alphabets page and a similar sized stain to the title page beneath it. Beyond these early flaws, the several hundred pages of the main dictionary text block remain clean, intact, and well-preserved. Pages unnumbered but text block is several hundred pages, 5" thick. In 1721, Bailey published the first first monolingual English dictionaries to focus on defining words in common usage, rather than just difficult words. Bailey's Dictionarium Britannicum (1730 and 1736) was the primary resource mined by Samuel Johnson for his Dictionary of the English Language (1755). The "Scott-Bailey" or "Bailey-Scott" dictionary, contains relatively slight revisions by Scott, but mostly plagiarizes Johnson's own dictionary. "The attempt of the Bailey proprietors to enter a folio to rival Johnson's great Dictionary remained alive through 1772, three years after Scott's death." The publishers of this volume are James Rivington and James Fletcher. Rivington lost his printing business in London around this time and emigrated to New York in 1760 where he became the leading Loyalist printer during the American Revolution.
