Il saggio intende ripercorrere un denso capitolo di storia della musica del Settecento, sfruttando un punto di vista del tutto inedito: quello di un virtuoso oboista e compositore, Matteo Bissoli, finora noto più che altro per esser stato collega del più celebre Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) presso la Basilica di Sant'Antonio a Padova. La ricerca, dall'impianto biografico, si svolge intrecciando documenti archivistici di varia natura, lettere, manoscritti e strumenti musicali, poemi, trattati scientifici, opere d'arte e altro ancora: questo consente di offrire al lettore una visione piuttosto ampia di un ambiente culturale vivace, e non soltanto per quanto riguarda la musica, che pure vi era altamente considerata. Perciò la sua figura viene qui restituita, nella sua rivalutata importanza, alla memoria storica e il tutto a partire da un meraviglioso ritratto a olio su tela (in copertina), fortuitamente ritrovato, che è stato solo il primo passo compiuto per sottrarre all'oblio una quantità d'informazioni altrimenti impensabile: dalla storia dell'oboe a quella del mecenatismo musicale, la condizione sociale dei musicisti, le loro consuetudini professionali, il pensiero sull'arte dei suoni e così via.
