Folded twice for postage, and accompanied by envelope with stamps and 1950 Edinburgh postmark, addressed by her to 'Adam Dickson Esq. Junior / 28 Comely Bank Grove | Edinburgh'. I am enclosing an autograph on sticky paper as this saves trouble doesn't it?' She continues in depressing style: 'I always tell my husband that no-one under 80 probably likes my books & they will all die out, so you see how nice, apparently, from your address, to find an exception!'.

In den Warenkorb[1] + 8pp., 4to. On one side each of nine leaves, held together with a brass stud. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with the first page (carrying only the title and with pencil note 'Ordered') detached. The text is on eight numbered pages, Two passages are deleted in manuscript, as is the final sentence: 'I have written with full knowledge of the facts.' The first paragraph lays out the Duchess's argument: 'The words I have written at the head of this paper express the conviction that has been forcing itself upon me for a long time past and, in the light of latter day developments appears to stand beyond the reach of doubt. We who must go are the aristocracy of England in our position as hereditary landowners. Let the newly made peers of the last decade, who won their spurs in the factory or the political clubs, the lobby of the Hosue of Commons, the drawing rooms, take heart of grace. They are not aristocrats any more than the actor is when for three hours out of the twenty four he becomes a Duke at the bidding of a playwright. Plutocrats, bureaucrats, peers, call them what you will, the great majority have no single instinct in common with the class into whose diminishing ranks they have endeavoured to force their way at the point of the cheque book.' The article concludes: 'The great landowners have had their chance for centuries, their failures outnumber their successes until these last are felt to be quite inconsiderable. In the light of our latter day crisis it can be seen beyond all possibility of doubt that there is no salvation in them. It is time that they should go and only the State can replace them if England is to respond to the needs of the immediate future.' The first deleted passage mocks the suggestion that ordinary people 'never learn the difference between a knife and a fork', and the second reads: 'Only two or three years ago I learned that when a certain peer visits one of his shooting estates the village inn is not allowed to receive visitors nor are any of the tenants of the estates permitted to harbour as much as a relation. Some plebeian might come "betwixt the wind and his nobility". Can these things endure in the twentieth century? Can the people capable of creating such conditions be permitted to enjoy and hand down to their heirs, the freehold of English earth? Let commonsense answer the question.' Note: Published with the subtitle Why the State should Own the Land, on 12 April 1917, in the Daily Chronicle, and reprinted in May, in the journal Land Values.

In den WarenkorbSee his entry, and hers, in the Oxford DNB. From the papers of her relation Lady Theresa Lewis. 2pp, 8vo. On the first leaf of a bifolium, the recto of the second leaf being addressed by him to 'Countess of Jersey / &c &c &c'. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded for postage. Written in high eighteenth-century style. Begins: 'Madam / If you have receiv'd the slightest amusement from my imperfect composition, I am most highly gratified, and feel myself very sensibly flatter'd by the honor you confer upon me by your condescending to regret the loss, which I have infinitely ye most reason to lament.' He wishes her 'every possible enjoyment' of her 'health and happiness in all your branches', till he has 'ye honor of paying you and Lord Jersey my respects in town'. He will 'not fail to remember any commands you lay upon me'. The valediction, with ornate signature, reads: 'I have ye honor to be, / Madam, / Your Ladyship's most / obedt & obligd hum. Servt / Richd Cumberland'. There is a crude pencil portrait of a man's face - perhaps Cumberland's and perhaps drawn by the Countess - at the bottom right of the recto of the second leaf.

Paris, Nepveu, 1817. Mennessier de La Lance, I, 60. In den Warenkorbmanuscript titles ('The Abdication of Edward VIII'; 'The Coronation of King George VI.'; 'The War') and manuscript commentary, mostly captions but with some longer passages, all in the hand of Antoinette Brett (née Heckscher), Viscountess Esher (see below), a few later clippings, including relating to VE Day, pp. [80], large folio, quarter white cloth with patterned cloth sides, printed label (blank) to upper board, some minor soiling but in very good condition. An absorbing documentary of turbulent times, the fact of it being largely formed of newspaper clippings available to any belying a significant detail of its provenance: the album was formed by Antoinette Brett, née Heckscher, daughter of the German-born American capitalist August Heckscher and the wife of Oliver Brett, the 3rd Viscount Esher. Not only does her background suggest a possible additional aspect of interest to the Anglo-American union a much less happy version of her own but there is a tangible proximity to events that is represented both in her commentary, which supplements the printed gossip with that of her own circle ('Lord Wigram told O. [i.e., Oliver, her husband]', etc.), and in the presence of such ephemera as the notice to Peers of the forthcoming 'Coronation of His Majesty King Edward VIII' (with her caption: 'The Coronation that never took place'), and both the invitation (addressed to 'Right Trusty and Wellbeloved Cousin' and signed 'Norfolk' on the King's behalf) and the ticket of admission for the Viscount and his wife to attend the eventual 'Coronation of Their Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth' at Westminster Abbey this last faced with the photographic portrait of the Eshers in their robes. Even were it simply the work of an outsider, this would be a wonderful feat of compilation, richly illustrated and with a broad survey opinion including her own but the inside perspective that enters at relevant junctures elevates it beyond everyday examples. Oliver Brett's father, Lord Esher, had been a confidant and adviser to Edward VII and retained his proximity to the royal family during the reign of George V. The fact of Churchill being referred to as 'Winston' in her captions both in the Abdication section ('Winston, fishing in troubled waters') and during the War ('Some of Winston's perorations') is more likely a token of true familiarity rather than false (see, 'Boris'). The quality of the work continues into the section on the War, where her interest in poetry is manifest in the various examples gathered to accompany the accounts of reporters; she notes the entry 'at last' of America into the War and includes a typed copy of an extract from the Duke of Norfolk's account of the Sinking of the Bismarck.
