Richard Forster and Michael Negele are prominent chess historians and authors renowned for co-editing the definitive biographical book series on Emanuel Lasker, the second official World Chess Champion who held the title for a record 27 years. Their monumental collaborative project, initiated alongside other chess historians, began as a massive 1,000-page German monograph published in 2009 titled Emanuel Lasker: Denker, Weltenbürger, Schachweltmeister (Thinker, World Citizen, Chess World Champion). The project later expanded into an authoritative, highly detailed three-volume English trilogy published via Exzelsior Verlag. Dr. Richard Forster is an International Master (IM) from Switzerland who holds a doctorate in computational linguistics and works as an AI/data engineering consultant. He serves as the primary technical editor of the series. Michael Negele is a dedicated German chess historian and researcher who spearheads the Emanuel Lasker Project, collecting rare contemporary photographs, game data, and personal correspondence to paint a vivid picture of the era. Raj Tischbierek is a German chess Grandmaster (GM, 1990) who won East Germany Chess Championship twice (1987 and 1990). In 1991, he took over the magazine Schach as Editor-in-Chief, for which he founded the Exzelsior Verlag (Excelsior Publishers) in 1999. The English trilogy, co-edited by Richard Forster, Michael Negele, and Raj Tischbierek, explores Lasker's multifaceted life both on and off the chessboard: Emanuel Lasker Volume 1: Struggle and Victories (2019): Focuses on his family roots, childhood, mathematical career, early chess achievements up to 1909, and his work with chess problems. Emanuel Lasker Volume 2: Choices and Chances (2020): Covers the middle of his chess career (including his famous encounters up to New York 1924), his deep involvement in other mind games like Go and bridge, his invention of the board game Lasca, and his early contributions to game theory. Emanuel Lasker Volume 3: Labors and Legacy (2022): Traces his turbulent later years in Soviet Russia and the United States, his philosophical endeavors, his impact as a chess teacher, and an analytical breakdown of his enduring playing style.
