Original pay stub. 8 1/2 x 3 /12 inches. Filled in in manuscript. Slight crease to lower corner but a very good exampleR. Laguno received 104 dollars for 26 days of work at 4 dollars a day. Leonard Coates Savage, a miner in Virginia City, owned a mining claim that became the Savage Mine. He sold the claim to a group of bankers and investors for nine claims on a mountain and a white horse named Shakespeare. Situated between Gold Hill and Virginia City, the Savage mine was bounded on the north by the Gould & Curry mine and on the south by the Hale & Norcross mine. The physical proximity of Savage and Hale & Norcross led to a common history, and although they maintained separate corporate identities, they experienced the same problems and successes. Both were supervised by James G. Fair in the 1870s and R. P. Keating in the 1880s. The companies exchanged material and personnel and in 1875 cooperated with the Potosi and Chollar mining companies to sink the Chollar-Norcross-Savage Shaft. In the 1890s when the Brunswick Lode was discovered, the Savage and Hale & Norcross joined forces with Gould & Curry, Best & Belcher, Consolidated California & Virginia, Chollar, and Potosi to dig the shaft.

A prospectus for the Oneota-Nevada Gold Mining Company properties with most of the content being a report by mining engineer and manager John Freise who recommends investment in the company, and four original gelatin silver prints showing the proximity of the properties to the railroad. The wrapper has some fraying along the edges with shallow loss at corners of folds. A very ephemeral production and perhaps the only surviving copy. (#166980).

Virginia City has no separate business directory but rather lists each resident with his job, but not necessarily the employer. The first thorough directory of the counties included, and the first directory of the region after the transcontinental railroad. Owner ink name on front endpaper ad; a few scattered minor stains, but contents generally very clean; rubbing and wear to spine with the joints reinforced with cloth tape. Very Good.

The Eureka Consolidated Mining Company, an underground, hard rock mining company operating about two miles from Eureka, Nevada, on Ruby Hill, brought a suit in ejectment against the Richmond Mining Company of Nevada to recover the possession of a valuable mining property. Stephen J. Field (1816-1899), one of the great justices of the nineteenth century, formerly the fifth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of California, was in the midst of his lengthy tenure (1863-1897) as associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court when he, the Hon. Lorenzo Sawyer, United States Circuit Judge of the 9th Circuit, and the Hon. E. W. Hillyer, United States District Judge for the District of Nevada, heard this case in San Francisco. The court's ruling on this complex and significant case involving mining law was appealed to the Supreme Court on a technicality. In 1881 Chief Justice Waite, after stating the case, delivered the opinion of the court: "Upon the facts set forth in the preceding statement we have no difficulty in reaching the conclusion that the judgment of the court below, sustaining the title of the Eureka company, was right." See U.S. Reports: Richmond Mining Co. v. Eureka Mining Co., 103 U.S. 839 (1881). Not in Paher.
