Le cosmopolitisme ambiant l'incite à regarder au-delà des frontières. Après un séjour en Géorgie, il s'installe dans le delta du Nil pour y cultiver le coton. Il apprend la langue et s'emploie à former des cadres. Marqué par son éducation libérale, il s'indigne de l'injustice qui accable le peuple fellah et commence à écrire une série d'articles, la plupart anonymes, pour dénoncer la cupidité du vice-roi et de ses comparses indigènes, turcs et européens.
