In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Presentation page following title page printed with: "Presented to The Maitland Club by Andrew MacGeorge". Andrew MacGeorge also contributes the preface. Edited by William James Duncan, with his name printed at end of appendix to the preface. Both Duncan & MacGeorge being members of…The Maitland Club, as printed on page 6. Contains two plates, both being facsimiles of documents, with frontispiece facing title page & second plate facing p.59, as issued. The preface begins: "The collection of Papers, formerly deposited in the Scots College at Paris, from which the contents of the present volume have been selected, was well known to our forefathers, as one of the most valuable stores for the illustration of Scottish History, and especially of those transactions in which Archbishop Betoun, the Scottish Ambassador at the French Court during the greater part of the reigns of Mary and James VI, was engaged. For many years this collection has been supposed to have been, in a great measure, lost or destroyed". Regarding the club: "The Maitland Club was a Scottish historical and literary club and text publication society, modelled on the Roxburghe Club and the Bannatyne Club. It took its name from Sir Richard Maitland (later Lord Lethington), the Scottish poet. The club was founded in Glasgow in 1828, to edit and publish early Scottish texts. Since the distribution of the publications was usually limited to members, the typical print run was between seventy and a hundred copies. The club was wound up in 1859, after publishing its own history as its 80th volume." Laid paper. Deckle fore-edge. Bound in original plain brown boards with printed paper label to spine. Interesting label pasted to front pastedown: "Wemyss Castle". Wemyss Castle is situated in Wemyss on the sea cliffs in Fife, Scotland. Historically, the castle is perhaps best known as the location where Mary, Queen of Scots, met her future husband Lord Darnley, in 1565. Second label pasted to front pastedown: "Bound by Carss, Glasgow". Printed in Glasgow by Edward Khull, Printer to the University. Mild wear to boards & spine, rear few pages slightly soiled, spine separating at rear gutter (though not detached), light offsetting from frontispiece, otherwise a nice clean tight solid complete copy. Full pagination as follows: ffep, blank, frontispiece, title page, presentation page, The Maitland Club members list - with 78 names (p.5-8), preface (ix-xvi), appendix to the preface (xvii-xxviii), list of contents, note on the plates in this volume, pages 1-130, illustrative notes (p.131-174), index (i-x), corrections & remarks by Bishop Kyle (xi-xii), blank, rear endpaper. Pagination complete. xxxi + 174pp + xii. Heavy large volume, extra shipping may be required. RARE.
