Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. A substantial and scholarly eighteenth-century work tracing the lineage of the Royal House of Stuart, authored by the antiquarian historian Rev. Mark Noble. Published in 1795, this volume examines the genealogy of the Stuart dynasty from the reign of Robert II through to James VI, drawing u…pon both Scottish and English historical authorities. Noble, a respected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, was known for his rigorous approach to historical and genealogical research, and this work stands as one of his most important contributions. The volume is formally dedicated to John, Earl of Galloway, underscoring its connection to aristocratic patronage and the continued cultural importance of lineage and hereditary identity in late eighteenth-century Britain. Beyond its historical content, the work reflects the periods growing interest in structured genealogical study, emerging alongside the consolidation of antiquarian scholarship and national historical identity. An Historical Genealogy of the Royal House of Stuarts, from the Reign of K. Robert II. to that of K. James VI. By Rev. Mark Noble, F.A.S. of London and Edinburgh. London: Printed for R. Faulder, New Bond Street, 1795. First edition. Quarto (approx.). Full contemporary calf binding, spine gilt in compartments with morocco label. Condition: Binding sound with wear, rubbing, and surface marking to boards; spine neatly tooled. Internally clean with light spotting and toning consistent with age. A well-preserved example of an eighteenth-century antiquarian work. Why This Matters; This is not simply a genealogical record, it is part of the late eighteenth-century movement to formalise history through documentation, lineage, and scholarly authority. The Stuart dynasty, central to British and Scottish history, remained a subject of enduring fascination long after its political decline. This volume reflects that continued cultural relevance, offering a structured and researched account of royal descent at a time when genealogy was becoming a serious academic discipline. A true eighteenth-century first edition A work tied to royal lineage and British history A well-produced antiquarian volume in original binding It is both a reference work and a tangible artifact of how history was recorded, preserved, and interpreted in the Georgian period.
