Beginning with a brief overview of the origins of the fur trade in eastern North America, the work provides a detailed description and analysis of the major fur-trading companies operating west of the Mississippi River, other than those in the Southwest. Volume 1 covers the organisation and financing of the trade and a detailed history of the major American companies operating in the trans-Mississippi West to the year 1843. Volume 2 follows figures such as Ezekial Williams, Hugh Glass, Mike Fink, and John Colter, and describes the explorers, missionaries, government survey parties, and Indian tribes of the fur trade West, together with the geography that often determined their success or failure. Nine appendixes containing miscellaneous primary materials precede a bibliography and index.
