Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. Cover photo for Scheherajazz by George Pickow (model not credited) (illustrator). Not books but two 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm, "Stereo Fidelity" vinyl record albums: Scheherajazz, Somerset SF-9700, from 1959, offers near-mint vinyl in a very-good-plus cardboard jacket. Our second LP, "Swingin' With Prince Igor," from 1960, which offers one side adapted from Borodin's Polovtsian Dances from the Prince Igor Suite and the second side adapted from Wagner's "beautifully morose Overture to Tannhauser," Somerset SF-16000, offers very-good-plus vinyl (no problems, just some track wear) in a near mint cardboard jacket. The 28-piece All-Star Jazz Band features Pete Condoli, trumpet, Gus Bivona, sax, Paul Horn on flute and reeds, Vince De Rosa, french horn, etc., under concertmeister Jacques Gasselin. Lloyd Vernon "Skip" Martin (1916-1976) played sax with Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, first arranged for Count Basie. He was the sole credited orchestrator for Judy Garland's comeback vehicle "A Star Is Born" (1954), which contains many arrangements by him of Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin ballads, principally "The Man that Got Away" and "It's a New World." Although both these LPs have been opened, "Swingin' with Prince Igor" retains its original shrink-wrap. The pair now reduced from $22.

Here & in the stories that accompany it, including "The Conversion of the Jews" and "Defender of the Faith", Roth depicts Jewish lives in 1950s America w/ unflinching sharpness of observation. In "Letting Go", a sprawling novel set largely against the backdrop of Chicago in the 1950s, Roth portrays the moral dilemmas of young people cast precipitously into adulthood, & in the process describes a skein of social & family responsibilities as they are brought into focus by issues of marriage, abortion, adoption, friendship, & career. The novel's expansiveness provides a wide scope for Roth s gift for vivid characterization, & in his protagonist Gabe Wallach he creates a nuanced portrait of a responsive young academic whose sense of morality draws him into the ordeals of others with unforeseen consequences. * The LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an award-winning, nonprofit program dedicated to publishing America's best & most significant writing in handsome, enduring volumes, featuring authoritative texts. In "The Great American Novel" (1973), a hilarious, bizarre, strangely poignant tall tale of American pieties & American lunacy, Roth lifts the lid on the suppressed history of the homeless Ruppert Mundys of baseball's despised & vanquished 3rd major league, turning the national pastime into unfettered picaresque farce. The cast of improbable characters includes: Gil Gamesh, the pitcher who actually tried to kill the umpire; John Baal, the ex-con first baseman, "The Babe Ruth of the Big House", who never hit a home run sober; & the House Un-American Activities Committee. "My Life as a Man" (1974) is Roth's most blistering novel, the savage, sometimes lurid account of the all-out battle waged between the young writer Peter Tarnopol & the wife who is his nemesis, his demon, & his muse. This is the treacherous world of Strindberg nearly a century later: the story of a fierce marital tragedy of obsession & blindness & desperate need. The volume closes with "The Professor of Desire" (1977), which charts the 2nd sexual metamorphosis of David Kepesh, protagonist of "The Breast". Roth follows Kepesh, an adventurous man of intelligence & feeling, into a vast wilderness of erotic possibility. "The Professor of Desire" is the troublingly affecting novel about the dilemmas of desire that prompted Milan Kundera to proclaim Roth "a great historian of modern eroticism." * ABOUT THE EDITOR: ROSS MILLER is Professor of English & Comparative Literature at the University of Connecticut. His criticism has appeared in scholarly journals, The WSJ, The Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times. He is the author of "American Apocalypse: The Great Fire & the Myth of Chicago" & "Here's the Deal: The Buying and Selling of a Great American City". * THE LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an award-winning, nonprofit program dedicated to publishing America's best & most significant writing in handsome, enduring volumes, featuring authoritative texts.
