Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. None. 1974 Morningside Bookshop reprint of the 1905 Neale Pub. Co. First Edition. VERY GOOD condition with no dust jacket. Just a very few marginalia (Penciled checkmarks). Binding is tight and square. 808 pages frontispiece, plates, portraits 22 cm. . . . . . The 1974 Morningside reprint of *The War Between the Union and the Confederacy and Its Lost opportunities, with a History of the 15th Alabama Regiment and the Forty-Eight Battles in Which It Was Engaged* is a substantial first?person narrative in which former Confederate colonel William C. Oates recounts the Civil War from both the high command and regimental levels, emphasizing what he believed were critical strategic missteps on both sides that prolonged the conflict and squandered chances for decisive victory. Blending campaign?level analysis with vivid descriptions of marches, combat, and camp life, Oates devotes particular attention to the service of the 15th Alabama Infantry-most famously at Gettysburg?s Little Round Top-tracing the regiment through forty?eight engagements and carefully noting casualties, leadership changes, and battlefield conditions in a work prized today by scholars and enthusiasts for its detailed Confederate perspective and regimental history focus. . . . . . . William Calvin Oates was an Alabama lawyer, Confederate officer, and later politician who rose from captain to de facto commander of the 15th Alabama Infantry and led the regiment in its bloody assaults on Little Round Top at Gettysburg, where his brother was killed and his unit suffered heavy losses. Born in 1835 in Pike County, Alabama. In the Spanish-American War Oates briefly returned to uniform as a brigadier general in the U.S. Army; his long life, made him a central figure in studies of Southern memory and Confederate military leadership.…
