A nice association copy, for this copy came from the library of JOHN BEECHER (1904-80), noted social protest poet and fine press publisher -- and a friend of Thomas Merton. Beecher underlines Merton's name on the front wrapper and inks in "Pg. 177" alongside it, and he also places a tick next to Merton's article ("Is the World a Problem?") on the table of contents and next to the beginning of the actual article. (In 1963 Beecher published "On Acquiring a Cistercian Breviary," a poem honoring his Trappist friend.) In addition, publisher EDWARD S. SKILLIN (1904-2000) of "Commonweal" boldly inscribes the front wrapper: "With best wishes / to John Beecher / Edward S. Skillin." An unusual and choice copy.
