Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear, chipping, short closed tears and small loss to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed with small loss, some slight overall dust and time staining. Not price clipped (6s), previous owner's name in pencil to ffep, internally clean tight and square, overall a reasonable copy for its age. 104pp. Frederic who is shy and sensitive, and Hugo who is heartless and aggressive. Frederic is in love with a hussy who is in love with Hugo. To save Frederic from an unhappy marriage, Hugo tries to distract him by bringing to a ball a beautiful dancer who masquerades as a mysterious personage and becomes the triumph of the occasion. She is a susceptible maiden in her own right. She not only breaks up all the cynical romances that have been going on before she arrived, but loses her own heart as well. Jean Marie Lucien Pierre Anouilh (1910-87), was a French dramatist whose career spanned five decades. Though his work ranged from high drama to absurdist farce, Anouilh is best known for his 1943 play Antigone, an adaptation of Sophocles' classical drama, that was seen as an attack on Marshal Petain's Vichy government. One of France's most prolific writers after World War II, much of Anouilh's work deals with themes of maintaining integrity in a world of moral compromise. Jacket after Oliver Messel (illustrator).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. A vibrant study of one of the iconic figures of twentieth-century design, whose Romantic, whimsical, and wholly original style influenced a generation of architects and decorators. Oliver Messel was one of England?s foremost interior designers of the twentieth century, whose work also spanned the worlds of the stage design, film, and architecture. Born into a creative family of wealthy bankers, his career began in 1925 designing for Sergei Diaghilev?s Ballets Russes. He eventually became an internationally celebrated designer, branching out into drama, film, opera, interior design, textiles, and architecture. Romanticism and eccentricity were hallmarks of Messel?s style. His sets were famed for their exquisite delicacy, impossible detail, subtlety of color, and inventive use of materials. From the 1930s to the postwar period, Messel explored the fields of interior design and architecture, eventually designing numerous houses built on the islands of Mustique and Barbados for the jet set of the 1960s and â70s, among them Antony Armstrong-Jones (Earl of Snowdon) and Princess Margaret. Oliver Messel is filled with previously unpublished images that chronicle a unique, eccentric, and, until now, largely overlooked oeuvre that reached across several mediums and continues to influence insiders from the worlds of interior design, architecture, and fashion.Edited by Thomas Messel with an introduction by Lord Snowdon, an epilogue by Anthony Powell and texts by Stephen Calloway, Keith Lodwick, Jeremy Musson, and Sarah Woodcock.

(from the publisher's prospectus).  In 1936 Oliver Messel designed the set and costumes for the film of Romeo and Juliet produced by MGM in Hollywood. The film was directed by George Cukor and starred Norma Shearer (to whom the book is dedicated) and Leslie Howard. This charming edition of the play was published as a souvenir of Messel's work on the film. Zustand: Very Good. Original Dimensions 375mm x 250mm. Original hand written signed letter from Oliver Messel to the actor Anthony Quayle. Written in pencil on pale grey paper. In excess of 450 words. Circa 1948; no date given. The letter is remonstrating about an intervention by 'Tony' Quayle to Binky Beaumont appearing to criticise the production design for 'The Lady's Not For Burning'; mention is made of Pamela Brown's red dress, the composition and colours: "The whole production was in its way something that meant more to me than anything that I have done for the theatre." The letter goes into delicious detail about the actress's insistence on her own preferences for costume "making the whole thing a mess and an anticlimax. Pamela's appearance was I regret to say a great disappointment to me. She seems perfectly confident that she knows best & there seems nothing further that I can do except not to upset myself by looking at it."/The 1949 production at the Globe Theatre, London (now the Gielgud Theatre) Director: John Gielgud. Cast: John Gielgud, Pamela Brown, Richard Burton, and Claire Bloom Designed by Oliver Messel. This production ran for 293 performances and transferred to Broadway in 1950. Very good. Signedes.

Folio. 27 x 39.3 cm. and 14 x 17cm. .Programme and entry card. .Royal Guests and the British Aristocracy joined the Queen and members of the Royal Family for a splendid Coronation Gala Performance of 'Gloriana' at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden on this day in 1953.The artist Oliver Messel, was born into a wealthy family; he travelled extensively and was exposed to art and culture from a young age. A privileged youth, his name is often mentioned amongst the 'Bright Young Things', for whom costume parties at country houses and jaunts to Europe on a whim became a thing of fable. This informal group included people such as Cecil Beaton (a life-long friend whom Oliver first met at Eton), Lord Berners, Noel Coward, John Betjeman, Harold Acton, Nancy Mitford, Edith Sitwell, Stephen Tennant, Rex Whistler and Evelyn Waugh, who famously satirised their exploits in the 1930s novel Vile Bodies. Having witnessed WW1, the 20s and 30s were a time of new freedom for these wealthy, artistic group of high society friends and acquaintances, who knew only too well how short life could be.The personal copy of Begum Ra'ana Liaquat Ali Khan (1905-1990), who was a Pakistani diplomat and the country's first female governor. She was born Sheila Irene Pant on 13 February 1905 in Almora, British India (today's India), to a Brahmin family who had converted to Christianity two generations prior. The personal copy of Begum Ra'ana Liaquat Ali Khan (1905-1990), who was a Pakistani diplomat and the country's first female governor.Academically brilliant, she graduated from the University of Lucknow in 1927 with bachelor's degrees in economics and theology.
