The liberal and flamboyant trial lawyer David Boies and the conservative lawyer Theodore Olson earned each other's respect and ultimately deep friendship while leading opposite sides in the noted case of Bush v. Gore. The case that this book focuses on was a landmark in the growing recognition of gay marriage, through a decision that overturned Propostion. 8, by which California had declared that only marriages between one man and one woman would be recognized by the state. In a subsequent case, Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court declared that all states that banned same-sex marriage or refused to recognize the marriages of same-sex couples married legally in other states, were unconstitutional in violation of the 14th Amendment granting equal protection under the law. He has been involved in high-profile cases in the United States, including United States v. Microsoft Corp., Bush v. Gore, Hollingsworth v. Perry, and the defense of Harvey Weinstein. Theodore Bevry Olson (born September 11, 1940) is an American lawyer who served as United States Solicitor General under President George W. Bush. In 2009, he joined together with President Clinton's former attorney David Boies to bring a lawsuit, Perry v. Schwarzenegger, challenging Proposition 8, a California state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. His work on the lawsuit earned him a place among the Time 100's greatest thinkers. In 2011, Olson and David Boies were awarded the ABA Medal, the highest award of the American Bar Association.
