3 volumes. VI, 73, [3 blank]; [3], [1 blank]; [3], [1 blank] pp. With 12 plans and 2 maps (mostly folding), and a total of 274 plates with heliotypes. Publisher's original printed blue paper wrappers. First edition in French of a work on the imperial palaces of Beijing by the Finnish-born Swedish art historian and professor Osvald Sirén (1879-1966). Besides the Italian Renaissance, Sirén was very interested in Chinese art and culture, and wrote various books on the subject, mostly in English. The photographs were all taken by Sirén himself, and he wrote an accompanying 40-page introduction on the so-called "Forbidden City", with two small chapters on the seaside and summer palaces. The heliotypes show mostly palaces, some from several angles, but also monuments, pavilions, statues, interiors and gardens, with short descriptions in both French and English. They give a unique view of the city in the early 20th century, since some of the buildings have vanished or are now settled in completely different surroundings. An English edition appeared simultaneous by the same publisher. - With a bookplate in each volume of W. A. S. Swets (1902-92). Minor foxing throughout, original paper wrappers heavily discoloured. Overall a good copy, wholly untrimmed and with the bolts unopened. - R. Thiriez, Barbarian Lens: Western Photographers of the Qianlong Emperor's European Palaces, p. 182.

The author Sirèn (1879 - 1966) was the pre-eminent sinologist of his generation. He became professor at Stockholm uinversity. Many of the plates are based on photographs made by the author during his many travels to China. Sadly some of sites he documented do not exist anymore. The set belonged to Adolphe Stoclet (1871 - 1949) , belgian finance-and industrial tycoon, famous as builder of the Stoclet palace in Brussels, a world famous Art Nouveau building designed by the Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann. (an invoice of the publisher, for vol. III to Stoclet is inserted in vol.III).Without doubt one of the nicest sets ever to come on the market.

Four volumes, large quarto, with a total of 476 photographic plates, uncut as issued in the publisher's card covers with printed jackets. Scarce and historically important set documenting the art and architecture of China, including hundreds of photographic plates from the author's personal archive. Osvald Sirén (1879-1966) was a pre-eminent sinologist and art historian of his generation. After completing a thesis on the European Renaissance, Sirén was drawn to oriental art through a personal interest in Theosophy. So began a life-long interest, of which Histoire des Arts Anciens de la Chine is a crowning achievement. Sirén was appointed professor at Stockholm University, although he lectured little and preferred to communicated through published works. Furthermore, like many art historians of the era, he advised private collectors and acquired artworks of significance during his travels in China. Sirén visited China several times between the wars, travelling widely and documenting remote and inaccessible sites. The present work reproduces many of the author's photographs, and as such forms a unique visual archive of Chinese art and architecture (sadly some of the sites documented in this series - including remote shrines and Buddhist wall paintings - did not survive the ravages of the cultural revolution). The set comprises the following, uniformly published under the auspices of the Musée Guimet: I. La period préhistorique l'époque Tcheou l'époque tch'ou at Ts'in (1929) II. L'époque Han et les six dynasties (1929) III. La sculpture de l'époque Han a l'époque Ming (1930) IV. L'architecture (1930) . Jackets worn, internally well preserved.
