Les mamelouks ne coupaient pas les beys de Tunis de leurs sujets. Détachés de leurs foyers, mariés à des descendantes des beys et parfois liés aux intérêts de notables du pays, les dignitaires mamelouks permettaient à la fois de distinguer et d'associer leurs maîtres aux différents groupes sociaux de la province qu'ils étaient amenés à gouverner. Mais cet usage dynastique des mamelouks par les beys de Tunis prit fin avec l'interdiction de la traite des esclaves et la promotion de serviteurs tunisiens aux plus hautes fonctions administratives dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle.
