The present Flora is the result of our long, painstaking excursions to various parts of the West Himalaya over many years and in a way marks the culmination of this difficult but utterly necessary task. The fern-allies of the West Himalaya have not been sufficiently studied and documented in detail with descriptions, distribution data, localities, keys and photographs. A Fern Flora of the West Himalaya Volume 7 deals with fern-allies and completes the account of Pteridophytes of the West Himalaya. A detailed pictorial taxonomic account of the fern-allies of the West Himalaya is presented in this volume.  This is a landmark work prepared after a long painstaking work based on actual specimens collected by the three of us. It is not based on secondary information collected from earlier publications. Nothing of this kind has so far been done. Profuse illustrations in the form of coloured photographs are provided. The present book, "An Illustrated Pteridophytic Flora of Jammu and Kashmir," provides for the first time a comprehensive modern account with detailed descriptions of two hundred and seven species, subspecies, and hybrids of Pteridophytes recognised from Jammu and Kashmir. The work is based mainly on the personal collection of the authors and is the result of long, painstaking excursions to various parts of Jammu and Kashmir over many years by the authors. One of the authors (CRFJ) made additional collections from Muzaffarabad and the adjoining areas, as well as Kathua and the Kashmir Valley. While the main objective is concentrated on the ferns of Jammu and Kashmir, details of the distribution of species in Jammu and Kashmir and also for the rest of the West Himalaya have been provided. This work is profusely illustrated with colour photographs and line diagrams. Seventy-two species of Pteridophytes are recorded from district Kupwara based mainly on the interest generated in ferns by SPK in Aadil Abdullah Khoja (AAK) who is based at Thandipora, Kupwara (Jammu & Kashmir) and has made many collections of pteridophytes in an ongoing programme from that area, which lies slightly north of the main Kashmir Valley. His various collections have been identified by SPK and CRFJ from photographs sent by him, as until then he had no knowledge of ferns. All collections have been deposited in KASH (herbarium, University of Kashmir, Srinagar). Many interesting findings of ferns, that were not known from Jammu & Kashmir, have been made from Kupwara. The most important was the discovery of Polystichum aculeatum. Other interesting finding from Kupwara are: Polystichum stimulans (not earlier known from Jammu & Kashmir), Pteridium brownseyi (not known east of Jammu & Kashmir), Deparia macdonellii, Diplazium khullarii (species is cantered on Jammu & Kashmir and is gradually replaced from Chamba (Himachal Pradesh) eastwards by the closely related D. Squanigerum), Dryopteris juxtaposita (very uncommon west of Himachal Pradesh), Dryopteris kashmiriana (a very rare species) and Lepisorus morrisonensis (an uncommon high altitude species). A few European ferns are present in Kupwara and are not known eastwards, some of these are: Dryopteris filix-mas, Polystichum lonchitis, P. aculeatum, Cheilanthes pteridioides subsp. acrostica, Cystopteris fragilis nothosubsp. x montserratii etc. Attempts have bee made to rectify some misidentifications of the ferns of Jammu & Kashmir (also present in Kupwara) in some publications.

Moreover, fern taxonomy has undergone many changes which have necessitated its revision. The present account (in six volumes) is profusely illustrated with line diagrams and colour photographs. It is based on personal collections made by the author during the last over sixty years of fern hunting in various parts of the West Himalaya. Information about those that could not be personally collected, has been forth coming from colleagues. The present flora is presented in six volumes.
