In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Special Edition. Rockville Center, NY: Zenith Books, (1958). First Zenith paperback edition, first printing: mass-market paperback. "Zenith Books edition published September 1958" statement to the copyright page. First published as THE CONDEMNED in hardcover by Prentice Hall in 1947, and in paperback by Perma Star in 1954. This Zenith Books edition has original and new seamy-life scene art. Parts of the mystery were drawn from the actual crime case of the Brooke Harte kidnapping in San Jose California. A hard-boiled noir featuring down-on-his-luck good guy Howard Tyler--who hooks up with criminals for some robberies, and is overwhelmed when it turns to kidnapping and murder. Adapted by the author (a prolific TV series scriptwriter and screenwriter) to the 1950 film titled 'TRY AND GET ME' for the American release and 'The Sound Of Fury' for the original British release directed by Sy Endfield and starring Frank Lovejoy. A vintage paperback and film collectible. Mild hairline crease to the spine that also shows some minuscule rubs, tiny surface nicks to the upper and lower spine edges, a few minor rub-lines to the rear cover, front cover slightly short at the fore-edge as is common, a faint damp-stain to the fore-edges of the preliminary pages, else quite tight and very good in glossy stiff-card wraps with sultry dame and looking man scene cover art; original .35c price and ZB-4 code to the front cover.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Very Good dj. First Edition. [light shelfwear, modest age-toning to edges of text block, tiny red ink spot on bottom edge; jacket is moderately edgeworn, a little browned at spine, with a little paper loss at both ends of spine, tiny hole in front flap-fold]. Pagano's second novel, continuing the story of the Italian-American Simone family (from his first book, "The Paesanos"), a fictionalized version of the author's own clan. By the time Luigi and Marietta celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, Luigi, formerly a Colorado coal miner, has become the owner of a successful fruit and vegetable market, and their children have married and made their own lives: one as a prize fighter, another as an artist. Pagano was better-known (and more prolific) as a screenwriter than as a novelist, with sixteen feature films and several dozen TV series episodes to his credit between 1938 and 1969, over which time he published just three novels. (His third and final published book was "The Condemned," which appeared in 1947.) His parents had initially lived in several coal-mining communities in Colorado before settling in Denver (the partial setting for this novel, with other episodes taking place in Salt Lake City and Los Angeles), where Jo was born in 1906. An early interest in art and writing led him to the West Coast, where he began to publish (and illustrate) short fiction about 1933; he got his first serious attention when his early short story, "The Disinherited" (not to be confused with the Jack Conroy novel of the same name), published in the November 1933 issue of Scribner's Magazine, was selected for inclusion in a 1934 anthology entitled "Editor's Choice." ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience." In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Very Good dj. First Edition. [light shelfwear, a bit of dust-soiling to the top edge of the text block, one-time owner's signature on front endpaper (see Notes); the jacket is heavily browned along the spine, somewhat less so along the edges of both the front and rear panels]. The first of two novels by this Colorado-born author, based on his own Italian immigrant family (fictionalized as the Simones and the Maccaluccis). Pagano was better-known (and more prolific) as a screenwriter than as a novelist, with sixteen feature films and several dozen TV series episodes to his credit between 1938 and 1969, over which time he published just three novels. (The sequel to this book was "Golden Wedding," published in 1943; his third book was "The Condemned," which appeared in 1947.) His parents had initially lived in several coal-mining communities in Colorado (the setting for this novel and parts of "Golden Wedding") before settling in Denver, where Jo was born in 1906. An early interest in art and writing led him to the West Coast, where he began to publish (and illustrate) short fiction about 1933; he got his first serious attention when his early short story, "The Disinherited" (not to be confused with the Jack Conroy novel of the same name), published in the November 1933 issue of Scribner's Magazine, was selected for inclusion in a 1934 anthology entitled "Editor's Choice." (A 1951 reference book entry on Pagano states that the story, "about the effect of the depression on homeless boys, was filmed by Hollywood," but this isn't exactly what one might assume: rather than being adapted for any kind of studio production, the story served as the basis for a 16mm "home movie" adaptation made by actor Lew Ayres. As reported in a 1935 UP story: "Lew had built the sets, assembled the cast, drew the titles, filmed and directed the picture and scored it with records. It was so well done that [Nat] Levine signed Lew to a long-term director's contract, which specifies Lew is not to act." Ayres, however, did continue to act, and there is no record of him ever having directed anything, so you can make of that news item whatever you will.) This copy bears the ownership signature of novelist and poet Sanora Babb, who, like Pagano, spent a good deal of her childhood in Colorado before making her way to California, where she worked as a journalist and eventually met and married the famed Chinese-American cinematographer James Wong Howe. ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience."
