[++] The four papers are all excised cleanly from a larger bound volume, and come with their original front and rear (pink) wrappers. GOOD, strong copies. "The theory of spontaneous generation was finally laid to rest in 1859 by the young French chemist, Louis Pasteur. The French Academy of Sciences sponsored a contest for the best experiment either proving or disproving spontaneous generation. Pasteur's winning experiment [the report offered here] was a variation of the methods of Needham and Spallanzani. He boiled meat broth in a flask, heated the neck of the flask in a flame until it became pliable, and bent it into the shape of an S. Air could enter the flask, but airborne microorganisms could not - they would settle by gravity in the neck. As Pasteur had expected, no microorganisms grew. When Pasteur tilted the flask so that the broth reached the lowest point in the neck, where any airborne particles would have settled, the broth rapidly became cloudy with life. Pasteur had both refuted the theory of spontaneous generation and convincingly demonstrated that microorganisms are everywhere - even in the air."-- Russell Levine and Chris Evers, "The Slow Death of Spontaneous Generation (1668-1859)", from the National Health Museum website.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Dust Jacket. First Edition. Pasteur's paper on pages 5-110 with 2 folded plates in Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Series 3, v. 64, 1862, complete. Very good copy in marbled paper over boards and leather with gold lettering on spine. Mild edge wear. See GM 2475. This paper is an expanded version of a paper presented in 1861. In it Pasteur demonstrated beyond dispute that fermentation is caused by micro-organisms and that without them fermentation does not occur. The 'heating method' Pasteur recommended was the earliest form of "pasteurization." This paper marks the downfall of the theory of spontaneous generation and the beginning of the germ theory of disease from which all modern bacteriology and immunology have developed. …

(21,5 x 13,5 cm). 512 S. Moderner Halbleinwandband im Stil der Zeit. Erste Ausgabe von Pasteurs Nachweis, dass die Fermentation durch einen lebenden Organismus verursacht wird. - "In December 1857 Pasteur published the first in a series of abstracts, notes, and letters on alcoholic fermentation that culminated in a long and classic memoir of 1860 (das angebotene Werk). Divided into two major sections, dealing respectively with the fate of sugar and of yeast in alcoholic fermentation, it inflicted on the chemical theory what Duclaux called 'a series of blows straight from the shoulder, delivered with agility and assurance.' Pasteur established that alcoholic fermentation invariably produces not only carbonic acid and ethyl alcohol - as was well known - but also appreciable quantities of glycerin and succine acid as well as trace amounts of cellulose, 'fatty matters,' and 'indeterminate products.' On the basis of these results, Pasteur emphasized the complexity of alcoholic fermentation and attacked the tendency of chemists since Lavoisier to depict it as the simple conversion of sugar into carbonic acid and alcohol. If the alleged simplicity of the process had formerly been seen as evidence of its chemical nature, he argued, then its actual complexity ought now to be seen as evidence of its dependence on the activity of a living organism. In truth, the complexity of alcoholic fermentation was such as to prevent the writing of a complete equation for it, a fact which was only to be expected, since chemistry was 'too little advanced to hope to put into a rigorous equation a chemical act correlative with a vital phenomenon'" (DSB). - Stellenweise etwas stockfleckig. First Edition. Folio (33cm.); publisher's tan printed card wrappers; 18pp. Wrapper lightly soiled, faint vertical creasing, a few tiny chips to spine, ele Very Good, internally fresh and fine save the crease. Polemical attack on the state of the French university system written in March, 1871, two months after the end of the disastrous (for the French) Franco-Prussian War. As Pasteur argues, whereas in Germany universities proliferated across the country, France, "stymied by revolution, was always occupied with the sterile search for a better form of government, giving only distracted attention to her institutions of higher learning" (p. 9, our translation). At the root of all this was the regime of Napoleon I, who, in the early years of the 19th century, neglected the country's twenty-eight extant institutions of higher learning in favor of his Université de France, a disastrously centralized state-run institution that he established in 1808. The University suffered greatly during the Restoration, and with it the quality of education so that by 1868 only £8,000 were being spent for "true academic purposes" across the country (cf. W. Chandler Roberts et al, "Journal of the Society for Arts, Vol. 32, no. 1655, August 8, 1884, p. 905), creating a lacuna of learned and innovative thinkers to match Germany's. Perhaps in order to combat this downward trend, Pasteur later founded the Pasteur Institute in 1887, serving as its director until his death in 1895. This appears to be the only separate appearance of Pasteur's tract, published abroad and distributed to various foreign leading scientific figures, among these "Darwin's Bulldog" Thomas Henry Huxley, who makes mention of this work in an address delivered in October of that same year. The essay appeared again in print in 1947, following an even more disastrous encounter with Germany, in a collection titled "Pour l'Avenir de la Science Française." This publication quite scarce, with four physical copies noted in OCLC as of February, 2020. COPAC adds one copy, at the LEC Library (UK).…
