Printed wrappers, 20 cm, 46, [9] pp. From the introductory note: "One of the most original and exciting Victorian poets, Coventry Patmore, has been unjustly neglected. His magnificent long poem celebrating married love, 'The Angel in the House', and its sequel, 'The Victories of Love', were both Victorian best-sellers; today they are not even in print. Most editions of Patmore's books are now scarce. Undoubtedly the rarest is the little volume of nine odes which first appeared anonymously in Aprii, 1868, in a privately printed edition of 250 copies. Hitherto, Patmore had confined his verse to simple metres, but now he began experimenting with complex rhythms and lines of irregulär length. To test critical opinion he sent copies of the book to his literary friends and acquaintances. Only John Ruskin appears to have had any praise, and this was faint. .Bitterly disappointed the unhappy poet decided to burn the remaining copies of the book in his possession. Fortunately, one or two copies were saved by his daughter Emily. According to Sir Edmond Gosse this pale green booklet is 'one of the rarest as it is one of the most in- teresting poetical volumes of the Victorian age '. To increase the circulation of this unique work we now print the original text of 1868 in facsimile. Nine years passed before the odes, in revised form, were finally published in The Unknown Eros and other Odes. To complete our book we include a bibliography, and an important unpublished letter from Alice Meynell to Osbert Burdett the author of The Idea of Coventry Patmore. The bibliography does not include contributions to periodicals.". Pencilled spine-title, pencilled notes at end, wrappers slightly fingersoiled otherwise Very Good.…
