The project's main focus was a cellar ruin interpreted to have been the site of a mid-eighteenth century Snuff and Tobacco Manufacture. The author presents archival data collected during the survey phase, and historical research conducted during the excavation phase which served to reinforce the hypothesis. Despite a lack of distinctive tools or architectural features associated with this activity, the author sought to identify the function of the cellar ruin as a Snuff and Tobacco Manufacture through extensive flotation samples and soil chemistry tests. The author posits that the most significant contribution of this work is to point out that it may not be possible to identify industrial activities of this type through the application of archaeological techniques. Through the application of several analytical techniques and the comparison of the results, the author offers a heuristic exercise to hone and refine analytical techniques. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

In den WarenkorbHardback. Zustand: New. Amid the chaos of battle and the harsh conditions of prisoner-of-war camps, tens of thousands of soldiers from both the Union and Confederate armies made controversial decisions to switch their allegiances. Building upon his 2020 work, Changing Sides: Union Prisoners of War Who Joined the Confederate Army, Patrick Garrow explores the other side of this overlooked aspect of Civil War history.Significantly expanding on previous scholarship around "galvanized Yankees," Garrow begins his study with an overview of Civil War prisons as a whole. He outlines unsavory conditions endured by prisoners of war on both sides, including a lack of proper shelter, food, potable water, and medical care. Notably, Garrow argues that the deplorable conditions of these army prisons were not the only motivator that fueled soldiers' decisions to switch sides as the war waned. Garrow investigates service records, pension files, period newspapers, and regimental histories to uncover the complex motivations of Confederate prisoners of war who joined Federal forces. He documents the individual histories of twelve distinct infantry and calvary regiments, contextualizing the wartime climate, struggles, and political leanings of the soldiers grappling with survival and allegiance during the Civil War.Alongside Garrow's first volume, From Gray to Blue is an insightful addition to existing Civil War scholarship that will engage and inform both history scholars and general readers.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Garrow's book investigates the experience of imprisoned Union soldiers during the final years of the American Civil War, including their captivity and their repatriation into Confederate ranks. Patrick Garrow's research stems from the archaeological excavation of Florence Prison in 2006 and subsequent archival research in the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion and other primary records. Garrow's deeply researched portrait will fill a significant gap in our understanding of Union POWs, since Dee Brown's lengthy work, Galvanized Yankees, dating back to the 1960s, largely focused on Confederate POWs that fought for the Union'.
