[iv], 96 coloured lithographs on single pages, 4pp index 33x25, half blue morocco over marbled boards, 5 raised bands on spine, beautifully decorated in glt. Boards edge rubbed, and slightly bumped, pages slightly cockled, tissue guards not present, very attractive handwritten dedication dated 1876 on half title, contents very good thus. The second of two works issued by the Pauquets with a selection of 96 of their coloured plates; the other was wholly for French examples, while this covers the rest of the world, with examples from Europe, Africa and Asia. The binding is not original, but is very attractive; the absence of the tissue guards suggested a full and later rebinding. The dedication is to Maria d'Aguilar (Blackhall??) of Edinburgh from her unnamed husband; the unusual middle name might indicate a link to the early English rugby international Francis d'Aguilar, whose grandmother was called Maria, and whose uncle the explorer and author Richard Burton also had a sister of the same name.

Hippolyte and Polydore Pauquet were French brothers and natural history illustrators. The "Frères Pauquet" were celebrated 19th-century illustrators of a number of popular works including 'Modes et Costumes Historiques Dessinés et Gravés par Pauquet Frères d"apres les Meilleurs Maitres de Chaque Epoque' (c1865). They were the sons of Jean Louis Charles Pauquet (1759-1837), artist and engraver, and Marie-Madeleine Lacroix (1771-1841). [1][2] Hippolyte-Louis-Émile Pauquet (28 February 1797 Paris - 20 March 1871) was the elder of the two and was largely responsible for engravings based on the illustrations by Polydore Jean-Charles Pauquet (30 July 1800 Paris - 20 April 1879), [3] though the two shared credit for their works. They first served as apprentices to their father, Jean Louis Charles Pauquet, and on 18 August 1812 enrolled at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Their work was exhibited at the Paris Salon through the 1820s and 1830s, though their recognition came mainly from their publications. No Binding. Zustand: Fine. Hippolyte Pauquet & Polydore Pauquet (French 19th century) "Grenadig" For L'Histoire naturelle des oiseaux exotiques by C.L. Lemaire (Paris: Pauquet and Debure, 1835-6) Watercolor on paper Paper size: 9 1/4 x 5 7/8 in. Mount size: 12 1/8 x 9 1/2 in. These exquisite watercolors were done by the Pauquet brothers in preparation for the publication of their L Histoire naturelle des oiseaux exotiques ( Natural history of Exotic Birds ), a splendid compendium devoting attention to the some of the most dramatic and colorful ornithological species. Done in pencil and watercolor on paper and mounted onto lightweight cardstock pages within ruled borders, they include manuscript notations in pencil and ink and numbers corresponding to the plate numbers of the prints. The book was issued in Royal Octavo format in Paris from 1835-36 and was comprised of 80 hand-colored engravings. Hippolyte Pauquet was the elder of the two brothers and primarily responsible for translating the drawings into engravings, and thus this suite of watercolors is almost certainly the work of the younger brother, Polydore, though the two shared credit and almost always worked in collaboration. Both received their early training from their father, the engraver Jean Louis Charles Pauquet, and then attended the prestigious École des Beaux Arts in Paris. In recognition of their talents Hippolyte and Polydore exhibited their works at the distinguished Paris Salon during the 1820s and 1830s, though their primary renown came through their publications. No Binding. Zustand: Fine. Hippolyte Pauquet & Polydore Pauquet (French 19th century) "Peroquet Ara Hyacinthe" For L'Histoire naturelle des oiseaux exotiques by C.L. Lemaire (Paris: Pauquet and Debure, 1835-6) Watercolor on paper Paper size: 9 1/4 x 5 7/8 in. Frame size: 17 3/4 x 14 1/4 in.
