A nice gathering of materials relating to and belonging to Dr. Thomas P. C. Barnard. Barnard was a respected physician in Buffalo and an ardent Theosophist, promoting the movement at the height of its popularity. He lectured frequently [according to The Messenger] and was so determined to spread the Theosophical message and recruit converts that he stated his habit of reading obituaries in the Buffalo area and sending theosophical propaganda to the bereaved.~~Barnard was a member of the Royal Arch Mason's, Tonawanda Lodge no. 247, and President of the Buffalo Lodge of the Theosophical Society. ~~This archive contains:~ (1) Two periodicals bound together, The American Theosophist (August 1913; Volume XIV, Number 11) and The Theosophic Messenger (October 1912, Volume XIV, Number 1) each containing contributions by Barnard: "Shamballa" and "Weismann's Cell Theory and the Permanent Atom". In black cloth, titled in gold on the cover. Very Good. ~(2) An offprint of Barnard's "Weissmann's Cell Theory" in printed wrappers issued and sold by the Buffalo Lodge. Very Good.~(3-5) Three collections of verse by M. A. B. Evans (Mrs. Barnard's aunt), inscribed by Mrs. Evans to Barnard and his wife, as well to "Emma" .~(6) The Junonalis (1897) a publication by Lockport Union School, where Mrs. Evans was a student in the 1870's. Her daughter, Mary Hale Evans, class poet of 1897, has several poems.~A picture both of the Theosophical Movement of the period, as well as of a certain class of Buffalo society.
