Eighteenth-century Pentateuch, vocalised, with Ashkenazic and Sephardic Haftarot and commentary by Rashi. The Proops family were a dynasty of well known Hebrew printers, publishers, and booksellers in Amsterdam. Solomon Ben Yosef (d. 1734), whose father may have been a Hebrew printer as well, was an established bookseller in Amsterdam and in 1704 had set up his own Hebrew press, which produced mainly liturgical books as well as works on halakhah, Kabbalah, Jewish ethics and history. From 1715 productions by Proops carried advertisements of books he had published, and in 1730 he issued a sales catalogue, the first such Hebrew publication. After his death, appointed guardians continued to operate the press, and even when his three sons took over, they continued to trade under the old name until 1751, and later - under their own names. In 1785 Joseph Proops sold most of his work to Kurzbeck of Vienna, and when Proops died a year later, his widow and sons continued printing on a small scale, with various partners, until 1812. Solomon ben Abraham Proops, grandson of Solomon Ben Yosef split from the family printing house in 1797 and continued to work alone until 1827. First edition of Levi's Hebrew-English Pentateuch, which came to be the best known bible translation by a Jew of its time. Published together with a sixth volume of the Five Scrolls. Roth lists this edition as five volumes only. This Pentateuch contains the Haftarot, a series of selections from the books of Prophets of the Hebrew Bible that are publicly read in synagogue as part of the Jewish religious practice, following the Torah reading on Saturdays, Jewish festivals and fast days. David Levi (1742-1801), was an erudite Whitechapel cobbler and one of the most remarkable characters of 18th-century English Jewry. He was born in London and after failing to make a living as a shoemaker, went to the opposite extreme and became a hatter, meanwhile continuing his studies at the Great Synagogue of London. In 1783 he produced a succinct account of the 'Rites and Ceremonies of the Jews, in which their religious principles and tenets are explained'. From that date onwards, he was constantly engaged in literary work, in the intervals of trying to earn his livelihood. He produced grammars, dictionaries, apologetics, pamphlets and polemics. For years on end he was a one-man Anti-Defamation Committee, always prepared to fight with his quill whenever the good name of Jews or Judaism was impugned. God speaks to Moses and demonstrates His power to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt in this hitherto unpublished fragment from Exodus in Samaritan. Remarkably early among preserved manuscripts of the Samaritan Pentateuch, it is also of imposing dimensions, deriving from a once imposing codex. - The text, in an admirably clear Samaritan hand, relates the conversation between Moses and God, the latter promising to deliver his chosen people "unto a land flowing with milk and honey". In response to Moses' questions, God gives demonstrations of His power, including turning Moses' rod into a serpent and back. When asked by Moses who he should say sent him, God answers "I am that am". - The earliest fragments of the Samaritan Pentateuch date to the eleventh century CE, but most of the manuscripts cited in the recent critical edition by Stefan Schorch date between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. Our fragment, apparently dating to the middle of the twelfth century, thus has a place among some of the very first witnesses to the Holy Scriptures in the language of Samaria. - The Samaritan script appears to have evolved at some point after the fourth century CE on the basis of the Palaeo-Hebrew alphabet, which was used in the Davidic kingdom. Although earlier Samaritan inscriptions use the Aramaic or standard "square" Hebrew alphabet, the development of a system of writing based on the pre-captivity script was probably a development meant to assert a separate Samaritan identity against a broader Jewish tradition which was rejected. - In contrast to Jews, Samaritans only regarded the first five books of the Bible (the Pentateuch or Torah) as canonical. The Samaritan Pentateuch includes a number of smaller variants from the Hebrew Bible, often agreeing more closely with the text of the Septuagint, in addition to the more substantial difference of mandating worship on Mount Gerizim rather than in Jerusalem. - A defining moment in Biblical history and a testimony to the endurance of one of the most ancient Israelite communities.
