Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Ala. Alatuti. Oloodoodi. Patrick. Tjungurray. He is a man of many names, and they speak to many lives lived. Each handle gets held for a while in different times and places. He was a young warrior by his first name, but by each of his subsequent names he has stood just as proud. By each of those names he has fought for his rights, and the rights of his people, to live their lives their way, on their terms.Through the prism of Patrick's art and life, this book illuminates a unique part of the twentieth century Australian history and art history. It also tells of a health crisis face Aboriginal people across Australia and an innovative and effective response to this crisis being driven by an extraordinary Indigenous organisation, the Purple House (Western Desert Dialysis).Patrick Tjungurrayi is revered throughout the Western Desert for his strength in Aboriginal Law, feted in the art-world for the originality and power of his paintings, and respected everywhere for his stand against the inadequate health bureaucracy of central Australia. His life illuminates the history, art history, and political history of Australia throughout the twentieth century. This is his story. All proceeds from the sale of this book support the work of the Purple House in providing dialysis and essential support service to people in Central Australia and beyond. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Icons of the Desert: Early Aboriginal Paintings from Papunya (Distributed for the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University) 2009, hardcover "very good condition" Icons of the Desert is an exhibition catalog produced by the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University for a show featuring forty-nine "dot-paintings" produced by Aboriginal artists from the settlement of Panpunya. Dot-painting has become an art instantly associated with Aboriginal Australia. In the more than thirty-five years since the advent of this movement, Papunya works have been widely exhibited and acquired by private collectors and museums in Australia, and increasingly abroad. Icons of the Desert is the first book to focus on the founding expressions of Papunya art. It examines their origins in the paintings produced in Papunya in the Western Desert during the years 1971 to 1973, after the Sydney schoolteacher Geoffrey Bardon provided Aboriginal men with art materials and encouraged them to paint on Masonite, against the wishes of Australian government officials. These paintings claim a unique status. Only around six hundred were made. They are also the first painted works to transfer the designs of desert ceremonial imagery to a permanent surface. Beyond this rarity and historical significance, however, the visual qualities of Papunya boards make them a uniquely appealing body of work. They have the freshness of trial and error, of experiment by artists who were seasoned in other media adjusting to an unfamiliar format. Illustrated with full-color plates of the forty-nine exhibited works by such great artists as Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Johnny Warangkula Tjupurrula, and Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri, Icons of the Desert features numerous color figures of comparative works and documentary photographs of the original artists at work, some never before published, and a chronological catalog documenting the works' history and iconography, edited by project curator Roger Benjamin. The leading Indigenous curator in the field, Hetti Perkins, contributed the preface. Roger Benjamin authored the lead essay, which situates the works in their historical and cultural context. Fred Myers, an internationally renowned cultural anthropologist who undertook his doctoral research at Papunya when the movement was still in formation, has written an essay on the stylistic development of one of the painting men he knew personally, Shorty Lungkarta Tjungurrayi. Vivien Johnson, the most prominent Australian author on Western and Central Desert art, writes on a second important artist in the collection, Charlie Tarawa Tjungurrayi. In addition, the memories of relatives of deceased painters in the exhibition are presented in the form of an interview conducted by Dick Kimber, who was a schoolteacher at Papunya in 1971 when the paintings were first produced.

Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. The art of Jackie Giles is a bridge between Aboriginal cosmology and the modern world. His paintings reveal the profundity of Dreamtime and the wisdom possessed by traditional healers. For a large part of his life, Jackie Kurltjunyintja Giles Tjapaltjarri (ca 1935-2010) led a nomadic existence, travelling across large tracts of and later spending time in small communities in Australia's vast Western Desert region. Jackie Giles was renowned as a man of great erudition and a powerful healer, Maparnjarra in his native Ngaanyatjarra language. The powers of these traditional healers include the gift of seeing into the bodies and even the spirits of others. In the 1990s, Jackie Giles started painting with acrylic on canvas. Mr Giles, as he was often called, combined an intimate knowledge of his land with his own oneiric visions to build what became a significant personal oeuvre. These paintings celebrate the Tjukurpa (Dreaming), which pervades the land and is a cornerstone of its identity. Built around labyrinthine patterns and monumental shapes, these dynamic, rhythmical compositions allude to the esoteric, sacred subject matter of the Dreaming. The intense, striking works that make up this awe-inspiring oeuvre manage to link two dimensions: Ngaanyatjarra cosmology and the rapidly changing modern world. Text in English and French. AUTHORS: Hetti Kemarre Perkins, daughter of Aboriginal rights activist Charles Perkins, is an Arrernte and Kalkadoon art curator and writer. From 1989 until 2011 Perkins worked at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Sydney), including thirteen years as senior curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art. She co-organised the Australian entry for the 1997 Venice Biennale. In 2010, she organised the project art + soul: a journey into the world of Aboriginal art, which incorporated a significant exhibition, an accompanying book and a three-part television documentary made by ABC Television. Hetti Kemarre Perkins has organised several major exhibitions and projects, as well as co-organising a major retrospective of Emily Kam Kngwarray's oeuvre held at the National Gallery of Australia in 2023/2024. Georges Petitjean is an art historian whose PhD thesis at La Trobe University in Melbourne examined the art of the Western Desert. He has lived and worked in Australia for many years and has closely followed the work of many artists in central Australia and in the Kimberley since 1992. He was curator of the Aboriginal Art Museum Utrecht (AAMU), Netherlands, from 2005 to 2017, when he was appointed curator of the Collection Berengere Primat. Georges Petitjean's main area of interest is the trajectory Australian Aboriginal art has followed from its origins to the world of international contemporary art. He has acted as a consultant or organiser for numerous Aboriginal art exhibitions in Europe and Australia, and continues to write about Aboriginal art and culture. Michael Stitfold was a field officer for Papunya Tula Artists in the Communities of Kintore and Kiwirrkurra between 2002 and 2004. In 2005 he was appointed manager of Kayili Artists, an art centre located in Patjarr, a small Aboriginal Community in a remote part of the Gibson Desert in Western Australia. While there, he worked with Jackie Kurltjunyintja Giles Tjapaltjarri and travelled with him to Sydney in 2009. From 2012 until 2020, he worked with Munupi Arts in the Tiwi Islands and was briefly involved with the Tennant Creek Brio (Nyinkka Nyunyu Arts and Cultural Centre). Through these experiences he gained extensive knowledge about managing art centres in remote Communities, acting as an intermediary between the artists and the broader art world. He has also acted as manager for Injalak Arts in northwest Arnhem Land. SELLING POINTS: . Jackie Kurltjunyintja Giles (ca 1935-2010) began painting in acrylic on canvas in the 1990s Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. One of the twentieth century's most significant painters, Emily Kam Kngwarray (c.1914-1996) translated her lived experience and cultural engagement with her Anmatyerr homelands in Central Australia into vibrant batiks and monumental paintings on canvas. In her vast and astonishing oeuvre, Kngwarray embodied the majestic scope of her Country and ancestral heritage. She layered motifs representing the plants, animals and geological features that formed the desert ecosystems around her. Her unique style and powerful creative vision redefined Aboriginal art and gained worldwide attention. Created in collaboration with the National Gallery of Australia (NGA), this is the first large-scale presentation of the artist's work ever held in Europe and a celebration of her astonishing career. Generously illustrated, the publication brings together Kngwarray's most significant works and includes archival material and a visual record of community consultations and visits to Kngwarray's Country.
