The author, a prominent Wesleyan layman, shows that this proposal has not been requested by the Methodist Church, who do not need or want an episcopate, and is also against the genius of Methodism and the spirit of the age. The author further shows that the money which this strange experiment will cost may be far more usefully applied, that the new ecclesiastical order will come into conflict with Circuit and District authorities, and that a Wesleyan Prelacy will prove an insuperable barrier in the path of Methodist Reunion. The author concludes that the glory of Methodism is the inspired personality of the agents whom God has used in every walk of life for the spread of scriptural holiness through the land, and that in this democratic age we must not see a church, which boasts that she is the church of the common people, assume the intolerable burdens of episcopacy.
