American variety - not so different from British music hall - started as an entertainment form in Tony Pastor s New Fourteenth Street Theater in New York. In England it began in beer halls before it graduated to its own specially built 'Palaces of Variety'. Here in this book is all the flavor and atmosphere of the glamor of the footlights and the heartbreaks in the dressing rooms.
