Marshall, Index, hardcover, no dust jacket, probable 1st edition, 1873. BOOK CONDITION: poor. The text block is in good condition, with few tears, dog-ears, or marks. The pages are age-tanned and occasionally foxed. Deckled fore-edge with a few pages still uncut. Not a remainder nor library book. The bookplate of a prior owner is pasted onto the inside of the front cover. Front cover is detached. Back strip of the spine is detached with heavy loss and tears. There are a few cracks to the spine of the text block, but the pages are intact. Both covers are worn and marked. 10 ¾ x 7, 546 pages, 54 ounces. XX [From the preface] At a meeting of the Harleian Society held on the 13th December, 1871, the offer of Mister Edward Morton, F.S.A., to edit this volume was accepted, but this design was unfortunately prevented by the death of that gentleman on the 15th of June, 1872. The society having purchased Mister Martin's copy of the original manuscript from his widow placed it in my hands with a request that I would edit it. I have carefully collated this transcript with the original, and I am thus enabled to place a verbatim copy of Harl. MSS. 5801, 5802 before the members of the Harleian Society. [From the Dictionary of National Biography] LE NEVE, PETER (1661-1729), Norfolk antiquary. He was the son of Francis Neve (the 'Le' having been dropped for several generations when Peter re-adopted it), a citizen and draper of London. He was interested in genealogy at an early age. When nearly twenty years old (1681) his father died. Le Neve's abnormal powers of work rapidly gave him a high reputation, and in 1687, when he was only twenty-six, he was elected president of the Antiquarian Society, on its revival in that year. This office he resigned in 1724, after holding it for thirty-seven years. He was also a fellow of the Royal Society. By 1701 he had made great progress in his projected 'History of Norfolk. Between 1703 and 1706 he appears to have been very ill. He also suffered at the time from some mysterious imputation on his character, and in 1704 quarreled with his intimate friend Millicent. In 1706, however, fortune smiled on him again. He died on 24 Sept. 1729, and on 1 Oct. was buried in Great Witchingham Church, Norfolk. He seems to have been personally jovial, liberal in money matters, fond of sport and the pleasures of the table. It may be presumed that he was in comfortable circumstances during the last few years of his life, for he succeeded to some property on the death of his brother Oliver. Le Neve's library, with some of his manuscripts, was sold at the Bedford Coffee-house, Covent Garden, in February 1730-1731, and a supplementary sale followed on 30 March. Le Neve's industry in collecting was very remarkable, he seems to have printed nothing. All his work was characterised by strictest honesty. Le Neve's catalogue of knights between Charles II's and Anne's reigns (Harl. MS. 5801-2) was edited for the Harleian Society by Dr. Marshall in 1873. …

He is 'shocked as well as surprised' at the sad news of the death of his 'old friend', who had told Foster's assistant the previous Tuesday that he had had 'a fainting fit which he understood came from any of the heart'. Foster is 'truly grieved at the loss', 'a more excellent worthy character it was not my lot to have met with and my experience has now run over many years. He was truly a friend and at my time of life there is little chance of my being able to fill the vacancy his death creates'. He concludes in sending his particular condolences to 'Mrs. Teulon', although Teulon's wife Fanny had died in 1871.…

The influential potter Herbert Minton (1793-1858), of the Staffordshire firm Thomas Minton and Sons, had died on 1 April 1858. A couple of months later, on 26 May 1858, Wyatt read before the Society of Arts his paper 'On the Influence exercised on Ceramic Manufactures by the late Mr. Herbert Minton'. The first four letters carry the stamp of the Society of Arts. All five items in good condition, lightly aged. The first two 1p., 12mo; the third 2pp., 12mo. The fourt 3pp., 12mo. The fifth 1p, landscape 12mo. ONE ('Saty'): Reads: 'I have selected at Phillip's (Chamberlaine's) in Bond St. beautiful [last word underlined] things of Minton's which he will send on Wednesday morning Space should be reserved for these about 12 feet by six of table.' (In 1823 H. and R. Chamberlain, 'Worcester China manufacturers', were at 55 New Bond Street. In around 1858 the firm were taken over by W. P. & G. Phillips, retailers of china and glass ware (established 1760), whose main premises were in Oxford Street.) TWO (27 May 1858): Regarding the proofs of the printed version of the paper, and his desire 'to have fifty copies for myself stitched in wrappers'. THREE (19 June 1858): Acknowledging receipt of Foster's 'note conveying an intimation that the Council of the Society of Arts will be pleased to see me on the occasion of the Annual dinner on the 24th.', and expressing regret that he will be unable to comply. FOUR (5 December 1863): On his return to town he writes that he will do his best 'to decide if you wish it with Mr Redgrave and Mr Webb the merits of your Competing Art Workmen'. He knows of nothing to prevent him from 'attending any meeting you may summons for the mornings of next Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday'. He adds: 'I say mornings because I see that colour is involved in one or two of the Subjects and one can scarcely reckon upon good light in the afternoon.' FIVE (15 October 1871): Headed 'Mem[orandum] -' and addressed to 'Dear Delamotte'. He is sending him '(by bookpost) the paper on Mosaic. I knew I had one or two printed separately but until today could not find one.'.…
