What if art were to exist beyond the canvas stretched upon its frame? This is the boundary André Valensi chooses to elude by exploring alternative supports for his work. The artist finds his place within the Supports/Surfaces movement, whose approach is grounded in a radical questioning of artistic practice as a whole. The artwork is no longer confined to the painting, to the finished object; it extends to an entire process encompassing materials, supports, and gestures. No longer concerned with representing a subject or an idea, no longer decorative, art is laid bare. In the same spirit, Valensi emerges as an idealist in search of a pictorial absolute, one that allows the very components of the work to exist on equal terms with the process itself, without intro-ducing the representation of any external idea.
