El texto de Chaslin coincidió en su fecha de publicación con la Psicopatologia general de Karl Jaspers, un autor que hizo gala de una posición respaldada en una concepción teórica (psicopatológica) muy definida, como fue la de la escuela Fenomenológica.Si bien es un aserto incontrovertible que la teoría es absolutamente necesaria, también lo es que mientras muchos la edifican al margen de la clínica, inventándola para explicar los casos, otros, los menos, parten de la sencillez de lo que ven y lo que oyen, y la construyen a partir de lo que los casos enseñan. A Chaslin la clínica le mostró la ?discordancia? en sus pacientes, pero no supo, ni pretendió, explicar ni su fundamento, ni su alcance teórico. Se consolaba, y eso no es poco, arguyendo: «Podemos estar tranquilos; las teorías mal fundamentadas pasarán, la clínica permanece».Chaslin fue hostil hacia las clasificaciones de las enfermedades sobre todo cuando corresponden a una teoría dogmática. Por ello en su libro sobre la confusión mental primitiva declaró: ?Creo necesario proclamar la imposibilidad de una clasificación satisfactoria? Su intención fue solo describir los signos de lo que llamó ?Tipos clínicos?, descripción no de la totalidad de la entidad nosológica sino de sus características esenciales.Hoy, momento de la historia de la especialidad en el que nos debatimos entre las posiciones pretendidamente ?a-teóricas? defendidas por la serie de los DSM, y la necesidad imprescindible de amalgamarlas con la dimensión subjetiva de lo humano, el consejo de Chaslin, respetuoso de los hechos como única fundamentación de las teorías fielmente ancladas en la clínica que nos guíen en el futuro, autoriza espacios de reflexión e investigación de una fertilidad insospechada.
