Ambedue le parti sono dedicate a Leopoldo, Principe ereditario di Toscana, ed entrambe sono precedute da lunga prefazione di Angelo Mai. Prima edizione di questo gruppo di scritti, ritrovati ed editi dal Mai. La prima parte contiene porzioni di opere, con testo greco e latino, di Filone Ebreo, nato ad Alessandria intorno al 20 a.C. La parte seconda del volume abbraccia una quantità di frammenti dei commenti dei vari interpreti delle opere di Viriglio; essi, come le due belle incisioni al tratto presenti, da un codice dell'Ambrosiana.
