Spine cracking between pages 398-399, but binding still holding. Slight wear to spine, outer pages & corners.; Full title of all 3 articles: XXIV. Experiments and Observations on the inflammable air breathed by various animals. By the Abbà Fontan, Director of the Cabinet of Natural History belonging to his Royal Highness, the Grand Duke of Tuscany; communicated by John Paradise, Esq. F. R. S. Read March 11, 1779 (pp. 337-361) - bound with: XXV. On the variation of the temperature of boiling water. By Sir George Shuckburgh, Baronet, F. R. And A. S. And Member of the Academy of Sciences and Belles Lettres of Lyon. Read March 11, 1779. (pp. 362-376) - bound with: XXVI. Account of a new kind of inflammable air or gass, which can be made in a moment without apparatus, and is as fit for explosions as other inflammable gasses in use for that purpose; together with a new theory of gunpowder. By John Ingen-housz, Body Physician to their Imperial Majesties, and F. R. S. Read March 25, 1779. --- A well-associated group from the high pneumatic-chemistry period, two of the three papers turning on "inflammable air" (hydrogen). Item III is the first appearance in print of Ingenhousz's paper on a readily made explosive vapour and his theory of gunpowder â" of interest both to historians of chemistry and to the collecting field of firearms/explosives. Published the same year as Ingenhousz's Experiments upon Vegetables (the announcement of photosynthesis). The articles and their authors in the history of science: 1779, the pneumatic moment before Lavoisier. Volume 69 is a document of experimental philosophy at the height of the "chemical revolution" in its phlogiston phase â" the decade in which Cavendish, Priestley, Scheele, and their Continental correspondents were isolating and characterising distinct "airs," but before Lavoisier's oxygen theory (consolidated through the 1780s) swept the older framework away. The shared vocabulary of these papers is the vocabulary of that moment: inflammable air (hydrogen) , dephlogisticated air (oxygen) , fixed air (carbon dioxide) , and the practice of eudiometry â" measuring the "goodness" or salubrity of a sample of air. Two of the three papers here are explicitly about inflammable air; the third belongs to the culture of precision measurement on which quantitative pneumatic chemistry depended. Read together they are a compact cross-section of Enlightenment science: Italian, English, and Dutch authors; grand-ducal, aristocratic, and imperial patronage; the Royal Society acting as the international clearing-house. Felice Fontana (1730-1805) was one of the most versatile experimentalists of the age: physiologist, physicist, and naturalist, and director of the Grand Duke of Tuscany's Cabinet of Physics and Natural History in Florence â" the museum still known as La Specola, for which he oversaw the celebrated series of anatomical wax models. He is best remembered today for his exhaustive work on viper venom and on the action of curare, and for his part in the Haller-era debate over irritability and sensibility. By the later 1770s he had turned to eudiometry and respiration, corresponding with Priestley on methods of assaying air. This paper belongs to that respiratoryâ"eudiometric strand: an examination of inflammable air in relation to the breathing of animals, contributing to the period's central question of how respiration alters the air. (The same volume carries a second Fontana contribution, a letter to Priestley on the airs extracted from different waters and the salubrity of air in different places â" confirming where his interests lay in these years. ) The paper was communicated by John Paradise (1743â"1795) , F. R. S. , a noted linguist and member of Dr Johnson's Club, married to Lucy Ludwell of Virginia; his command of languages made him a natural conduit through which foreign natural philosophers reached the Society. Sir George Shuckburgh â" the boiling point as a moving targetSir George Shuckburgh, later Shuckburgh-Evelyn (1751â"1804) , 6th Baronet and M. P. , was a wealthy amateur of the exact sciences and one of the more serious British metrologists of his generation â" later the author of the influential 1798 paper proposing a standard for weights and measures. His instrument was precision itself: he is known for measuring the heights of mountains barometrically and for the careful calibration of thermometers and barometers. The paper here addresses a problem that sounds trivial and is not: the temperature at which water boils is not fixed, but varies with atmospheric pressure. Establishing that relationship quantitatively matters on two fronts. First, for thermometry â" the boiling point was one of the standard "fixed points" used to graduate thermometers, so recognising its dependence on pressure was essential to putting the temperature scale on a sound footing. Second, for hypsometry â" because if boiling point tracks pressure, and pressure tracks altitude, then a thermometer in a pot of boiling water becomes an altimeter (the principle later embodied in the hypsometer). The paper sits naturally alongside the barometric work of J. A. De Luc, whose measurements in the Harz mines appear later in the same volume; both belong to the drive toward accurate physical constants and standardised measurement that underwrote the whole quantitative programme of the period. Jan Ingenhousz (1730â"1799) , born at Breda, was physician to the Habsburg imperial family â" the "Body Physician to their Imperial Majesties" of the title â" having risen to court favour partly through his championing of smallpox inoculation. He moved easily between medicine and the physical sciences, and stood close to Priestley (with whom he stayed at Bowood) : in 1779, the very year of this paper, he published Experiments upon Vegetables, announcing what we now call photosyn. …

Thirteenth Series. On the Tides of the Pacific and on the Diurnal Inequality." 1847, pp 1-29, with 5 large-ish folding maps. [++]These are 8 of the long 12-part series by Whewell on Tides. [++] "Between 1833 and 1850 Whewell published fourteen memoirs on the tides. Before the 1830 s little reliable observation of the tides had been undertaken: and the two leading theories, the Newton-Bernoulli equilibrium theory and the Laplace dynamical theory, were largely untested. The British Admiralty and the British Association initiated work on the tides that soon became international in scale. Whewell, with the help of John Lubbock, received and interpreted observations from all over the world; their work earned them the Royal Medal. Whewell s investigation of the tides began with an attempt to apply Thomas Young s idea of cotidal lines to the world s oceans. Had the idea applied, it would have allowed plotting the movements of tidal waves through all the oceans on the basis of initial observations of simultaneous high tides at different places. Whewell abandoned the idea in its general application, however, although the application of the idea did obtain some results for small, confined bodies of water and for shorelines.Whewell stressed the diurnal inequality of the tides ( that which makes the tide of the morning and evening of the same day at the same place, differ both in height and time of high water, according to a law depending on the time of the year ). He showed large variations in this effect in accordance with local circumstances and thought the inequality to be more basic than other features of the tides. From the failure of the idea of cotidal lines and the empirical prominence of the daily inequality,Whewell concluded that no theory of physical astronomy could account for tidal phenomena in a general way. Instead, the variety and multiplicity of the data suggested that detailed study of each individual shoreline was required. Given this conclusion, it is not surprising that Whewell s work did not contribute directly to theory of the tides. Consistent with the principles of his own philosophy of science, however, he could regard himself as having fathered the science of the tides. He thought that the beginning of a science involved the laborious collection and organization of data; full theoretical generality, if any, would come later."--Complete DSB Online. ** ALL of these papers are extracts. **.…
