Neuware - 'Simply outstanding in its scope and presentation, Beyond Fear and Suspicion should be required reading for all Americans - now, more than ever.' - Midwest Book Review'Vicky doesn't just tell these stories; she brings them to life, making you feel as if you're walking alongside each person as they navigate their new reality.' - Aymen Tabir, Executive Director of Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC) InternationalWhat happens when a Filipino immigrant tries to know her Ethiopian neighbors A journey through the heart of Little Ethiopia in a Washington, DC suburb, Beyond Fear and Suspicion: The New Americans in Little Ethiopia braids the stories of former refugees, asylum seekers, students, and diversity visa recipients through forced exits out of their native land, all while still reeling from the traumatic effects of wars, famine, and repressive regimes.Returning to her DC area home after living in Sydney, Vicky Pinpin-Feinstein found that many Ethiopians had moved to the suburb of Silver Spring. In this enriching story of a Filipino American's curious desire to know these people living and working in what was once an iconic American hometown, fear and suspicion greeted her at every turn. But Vicky was determined. Traveling to Ethiopia, she discovered a fresh perspective on identity, belonging, and the labyrinthine workings of a people divided by ethnicity, politics, and trauma.Beyond Fear and Suspicion: The New Americans in Little Ethiopia chronicles the connections and tensions between 'others' struggling to find their way in, illuminates the often-shifting ground of who and what is an American in the 21st century, and reveals the emotional truths behind their courage, redemption, persistence, and hope.--'Vicky Pinpin-Feinstein's approach to news gathering and poetry captures the sensitivity and nuance in the depths of human experience.each story is compelling and unique. Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 214 pages, Footnotes. Illustration. Notes and Sources. Author inscription on the dedication page. The inscription reads: To Charles & Marcela With fondest regards! Vicky. Born in the Philippines, Vicky Pinpin-Feinstein first came to the United States when she was awarded a research fellowship and joined an international research team working on a study of television and gender roles at the East-West Center. A full scholarship allowed her to complete graduate degrees in Communication and Political Science. She has worked for institutions such as the Smithsonian and public television, focusing on research and policy impact of media and society. The author was trained as a social scientist and works in international development and communications. Assists international organizations, non-profit organizations, government entities, and private companies on challenges relating to: Strategic Communications, Media and Communications, Public Policy, Organizational Change Strategies, Program Management, Assessments, and Evaluations of Socio-Economic Impact of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). She is a results-driven consultant with solid experience in media and communications, information dissemination, policy analysis, partnership development, and impact measurement. She is a conceptual thinker with proven skills in working with international teams; persuasive in both verbal and written communication; and, committed to developing effective working relationships viewing this as integral to business and finding strategic approaches to organizational problems. On an otherwise normal morning at a private school for girls, a 15-year-old student is picked up by soldiers and sent to a military camp, becoming one of the thousands of political prisoners arrested under Ferdinand Marcos' repressive regime in the 1970s. A year earlier, Marcos had declared martial law and a military government effectively took over the Philippines. After her release, author Vicky Pinpin-Feinstein was required to report to camp, her probation lasting five years. She was never charged and was never told why she was arrested. The effects of prison and the long-term probation makes Vicky's story an authentic representation of the pernicious effects of dictatorship and tyranny, effects that pervaded a life for decades to come. This is a historically vital memoir, not only moving in its rendition of what life was like for a young innocent girl, but also for its incisive analysis of the political forces that wrecked democratic ideals in a country where politics and violence have always worked together for the benefit of the few. A Thousand Little Deaths is a moving and historically important memoir of a young girl's experience as one of the many thousands in the Philippines sent to prison by the repressive Marcos regime in the 1970s. Though she went on to live a normal life after she was released, author Vicky Pinpin-Feinstein had always felt that something was amiss. It took an illness in later life to pave the way for her to understand what truly happened and to make sense of what it meant to survive, not only for herself, but also for many other Filipinos trapped in a vicious cycle of violence and tyranny.
